When you enter your 30s and some of your closest friends start having kids, your social life changes drastically.

One woman recently told her friend she couldn’t bring her young daughter to her birthday party with their friend group because it would be at a bar, and they wanted to be able to have fun. Now, her friend is feeling hurt.

She is about to celebrate her 30th birthday party, and one of her friends kindly put together a fun birthday dinner and celebration in a private room at a bar/restaurant for their friend group.

From the start, the friend who organized the party made it clear the goal was to let loose, get tipsy, and have fun. She and her husband have a three-year-old daughter, so they made sure to book a babysitter for the night in advance.

However, she’s run into a problem, as a few days ago, her friend Missy told her she’d be bringing her five-year-old daughter to the birthday celebration.

“I offered to pay my babysitter extra to watch her daughter [but] Missy said no because her daughter is in daycare all day, and she doesn’t want her to have to then be with a sitter,” she recalled.

“I said I understand but don’t think it’s appropriate for her to come. One, I know our group. We’re going to get rowdy, and I don’t want to censor myself. Two, Missy’s daughter is like a lot of five-year-olds, [which means] she doesn’t sit still and wants to run all over the place.”

To make matters worse, Missy isn’t very good at disciplining her daughter and usually lets her get away with whatever she wants. Because of all this, she knew Missy’s daughter would be disruptive to her party and tried her best to sway Missy from bringing her.

“I spoke to my friend who put [the party] together and said I don’t want any kids there,” she said.

“There’s a reason I got a sitter for my own kid. That friend agreed and told Missy not to bring her daughter. Missy has thrown a fit and said she’s not coming. I said I completely understand, [as] here are events I have missed because I don’t want to leave my daughter, and the group understands [because] we all have kids.”

To not upset Missy further, she offered to organize a separate lunch playdate with her and their kids so they could spend time together.

Then, she told Missy that she could try to show up at the restaurant on the day of the party, but if she brought her daughter, she wouldn’t be allowed into the private room.

Since then, Missy has been feeling hurt and excluded.

Did she exclude Missy, or did Missy bring this to herself?
