With a large number of tools at their disposal, prehistoric humans were in the best position possible to hunt and butcher the elephants.

It appeared that the “Paleolithic holy trinity” of water, elephants, and rocks was universal during ancient times.

Wherever there was water, there were elephants, which meant that humans had to find suitable sources of rock that were close by so they could make stone tools to hunt the elephants.

“It was a tradition: For hundreds of thousands of years, the elephants wandered along the same route while humans produced stone tools nearby,” Barkai said. “Ultimately, those elephants became extinct, and the world changed forever.”
