Venice Is Sinking, And Experts Are Suggesting It Be Added To The List Of World Heritage Sites That Are In Danger

Even small increases can have a severe impact, especially on a city that is located in such close proximity to the tides.

Adding sites to UNESCO’s list has saved the future of many cities. For example, when Belize made it onto the list in 2009, the government put a stop to drilling and oil exploration, which were the biggest threats to the barrier reefs there.

By pushing for Venice to be added to the list, the agency hopes that the city will become more motivated to address its pressing issues in an effective manner.
