I’m just going to come out and say it; it’s really hard to find sympathy in your heart for someone who broke yours. Karma has a way of circling back, and sometimes it lands right at the feet of the person who once made your life miserable.
That’s exactly what he’s experiencing now. This 44-year-old man has an ex-wife the same age as him, and not too long ago, his ex came running to him seeking his sympathy.
It turns out his ex is going through one ugly divorce, and her husband left her for the girl he’s been cheating on her with for quite some time.
“This is very similar to what she did to me 10 years ago, so she comes to me because ‘you know how it feels and you made it through,'” he explained.
“Well, yeah, had she not [dragged] my name through the mud for 10 years and even up until a few weeks ago made nasty comments to our kids about me (they are both away at college ), I might consider trying to help her out some.”
“I honestly don’t care she’s hurting, but a tiny piece of me wants to set a good example for our kids.”
His ex looks awful and is clearly suffering from what her man did to her, but when he got divorced from her, nobody stepped up to be his shoulder to cry on.
Not only that, but his ex went around telling anyone who would listen to her that she was happy to be rid of him, since he was the biggest mistake she made in her life.
Right now, he can see his ex is shocked and horrified that her husband is walking away, and she’s obviously depressed about it. But still, he doesn’t want anything to do with her and her mess.

“And for two weeks now, I have asked her to not bother me unless it has something directly to do directly with the kids (which is what our minimal conversations have been about since our divorce),” he added.
He’s left wondering if he’s being a jerk for not wanting to support his ex now that she’s the one who got cheated on.
In situations like this, it’s not heartless to protect yourself and your own well-being. His responsibility now is to his kids and himself, not to soothe the wounds of someone who once deepened his.
I think he should limit communication to parenting matters and shouldn’t get pulled back into her drama. Sometimes the kindest choice for yourself is simply to stay out of it.
