A TikToker and mother named Sierra Cooke (@shakenbabymom) lost her child in the saddest way. Her infant daughter, Christa, was staying with her biological father overnight while she started a new job as a massage therapist. But that one night would change everything.

Sierra and Christa’s father was separated at the time. That night, she had texted him, asking how Christa was doing. He replied with, “She’s whiny as [heck].”

The next morning, Sierra was at work and had just finished setting up her first client of the day for a massage when her manager knocked on the door, telling her that she needed to go to the hospital right away.

“I thought maybe Christa had a fever,” said Sierra. “When I walked into the room, the sound I heard still makes my stomach turn. I remember looking at her face. She had one eye open, one eye shut, but neither looked like her.”

Christa’s body was stiff because she had suffered a stroke. Her brain was bleeding, and she had gone blind from her injuries. She couldn’t eat or move on her own. She was only three months old at the time.

Sierra’s world changed forever when she found out that her daughter was a victim of shaken baby syndrome. She survived for three years before passing away.

After the initial incident, investigators questioned her, Christa’s father, and their families. They also did polygraph tests. Sierra passed, but Christa’s father failed his test. Sierra was granted full custody at least until the preliminary hearing.

Even with all the evidence against him, he was never charged with a crime or brought to justice. The prosecutors were afraid that if the case went to trial, and they lost, then Christa’s father could walk free with custody.

So, the case was treated like a regular divorce, and he was offered a deal. If he admitted to neglect and gave up custody rights to both of their kids, he would not have any criminal charges.

He accepted the deal and was spared from jail time.

“It all happened in one night from one moment of frustration that turned into violence,” said Sierra.

“So, I share this, not for sympathy, but because shaken baby syndrome is preventable, and if hearing our story makes just one person think twice about it, then our story is worth telling.”

Many TikTok users expressed their sympathies in the comments section, and some even shared their own experiences involving shaken baby syndrome.

“We were shown the brain images of a shaken baby when I was in school. Their brain basically turns to mush, and their life is stolen from them. It’s absolutely awful,” commented one user.

“Friendly PSA for all those worried about dancing/rocking/moving a baby around: this does not happen by accident. Babies are actually quite resilient, so it takes an awful lot of force and persistence to cause shaken baby syndrome,” wrote another.

“My nephew was also shaken at three months by his father. It was not easy seeing all that he had been through and had to go through. He lived to be 11 but never progressed past six months developmentally,” added a third.
