Children can disappear in a matter of moments. One minute, they’re playing on the swings, and the next, they’re simply gone. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare.
The last time anyone saw three-year-old Megan Elizabeth Garner was at a playground on March 27, 1991, between 11:15 and 11:20 a.m. The playground was just 50 to 60 feet away from her family’s home at Casa Grande Apartments in Tyler, Texas. It was a place where her family believed she was safe since it was so close to home.
Megan was with her six-year-old brother and two cousins, aged eight and four. They were doing what countless children love doing every day—playing at a neighborhood playground.
That morning, Megan returned home twice for raisins, water, and to use the bathroom before heading back to the playground. Everything appeared to be normal.
Sometime between 11:15 and 11:20 a.m., the other children left the playground to get a drink of water. Megan decided to stay behind at the playground.
She had been instructed not to cross the street alone, and there was no indication that she intended to do so. She was last spotted near a fence that separated Casa Grande Apartments from nearby duplexes and another apartment complex by the entrance to a laundromat.
When the other kids returned home, Megan’s mother asked them where she was. They thought Megan was already upstairs, but she wasn’t. Megan’s mother told them to go get her from the playground.
They returned at 11:30 a.m. and said they couldn’t find her anywhere. The family searched for about an hour before notifying the authorities. She had seemingly disappeared without a trace in the span of just five minutes.
Later that day, a possible sighting occurred. About four hours after Megan went missing, a man was seen at a local grocery store with a child matching her description.

The man was described as white, approximately 35 years old, and around 5’8″ or 5’9″ with a muscular build. However, nothing ever came of the sighting. No suspects have ever been identified in Megan’s case.
The police believe her case is a non-family abduction. Eventually, Megan’s mother remarried and moved away. She never moved on from her daughter’s disappearance and continues to hope for answers. Megan would be 38 years old today.
At the time of her disappearance, Megan was 3’2″ and weighed 30 pounds. She had brown hair and brown eyes. She was wearing a long-sleeved shirt with pink, blue, and green horizontal stripes, pink corduroy pants, blue socks, and blue and white Reebok sneakers.
Anyone who remembers anything about the day Megan Elizabeth Garner went missing or knows something about her case is urged to contact the Tyler Police Department at 903-531-1000.
After more than 30 years, investigators and Megan’s family are still waiting for answers as to what happened to her.
