A child’s birthday is supposed to mark another year of growth, joy, and new memories. Parents are always glad for the chance to watch their child blow out another set of candles on their birthday cake and imagine all the moments that are still yet to come.
But for the family of one young girl, the cherished milestones of birthdays became something entirely different ever since December 1980.
Six-year-old Ilene Rebecca Scott was last seen rollerskating outside her family’s mobile home on December 20, 1980, at 10:30 a.m. No one has seen or heard from her ever since.
Ilene was playing near home, which is where every parent expects their child to be safe. But she somehow disappeared without a trace.
It was the day after her sixth birthday, so the timing made the case especially heartbreaking. The family has spent more than four decades marking her birthday with grief. It’s a painful reminder that she never got the chance to grow up.
Ilene was reported missing by her mother two hours after she was last seen. Her roller skates were later discovered outside the front door of her family’s home at the Rancho Dominguez Estates Mobile Home Park in Carson, California. Her shoes were nowhere to be found.
Ilene’s parents were separated when she went missing. She was living with her mother and her mother’s boyfriend. She reportedly did not have a good relationship with him.
On the same day of Ilene’s disappearance, the man was arrested on unrelated charges. Investigators quickly ruled him out as a suspect in the child’s case.
Eventually, her parents divorced. Her family believes that she is no longer alive, but they are continuing to search for her remains in the hope of finally giving her a proper burial and bringing an end to the uncertainty. Her case remains unsolved. Today, she would be 50 years old.

At the time of her disappearance, she was approximately three feet tall and weighed 40 pounds. She had brown hair, brown eyes, along with several distinguishing features, including a brown birthmark on her right hip and a scar on her right eyebrow.
She was wearing a red or pink blouse, green pants, and brown sandals. Her nickname was Becky.
In many of these missing child cases, there are no witnesses, no clear evidence, and no explanation for how a kid could seemingly vanish into thin air.
Hopefully, someone may remember a detail they overlooked years ago and have that one crucial piece of information to reveal what happened to the little girl who disappeared the day after her sixth birthday.
