Could you picture your parents sitting you down to have a serious conversation, only to reveal to you that they didn’t want you? What would you do if you found out you were an accident your mom and dad resented?

It’s no secret that this 24-year-old man was the golden child all along. His mom and dad didn’t hide that he was their favorite kid, even though he has a little sister, who is two years younger than he is.

He caught on to all of this as he grew up, but the signs were there as soon as his sister entered the world. He got a ton of praise and attention, amazing gifts, and anything he really wanted, while his sister barely got anything.

It’s not like she was outright abused, but she was hardly a second thought, and their mom and dad acted like she was invisible.

“I started noticing it around middle school. My parents would brag about my grades to relatives but never mention my sister’s, even though she was pulling decent grades too,” he explained.

“They came to all my games but made excuses for hers. I got a car at 16, and she got told to figure out rides. That kind of stuff. It bothered me a lot. I started spending my own money on her birthday gifts because my parents would get her a gift card, while I got actual, thought-out presents.”

“I tried to include her in stuff and make sure she knew I didn’t see her the way they did. We got really close because of it, honestly.”

Their parents were excited to pay for him to have some advantages after graduating from high school, but he was not interested in owing them, so he got a scholarship.

Several years later, his sister got accepted to his college on a scholarship as well, and they’re both self-sufficient adults. For Thanksgiving, he and his sister spent it with their parents.

When dinner was over, their mom and dad sat them down to have a chat, and he figured they were going to announce their retirement.

But his mom burst into tears, and his dad blurted out that they never intended to have another kid.

“He said they never wanted a second child. My mom got pregnant with my sister by accident, and they seriously considered not keeping her. He said they tried to love her equally, but they couldn’t, and they were done pretending,” he added.

“Now that she’s an adult, they felt like they could finally be honest. My sister just sat there. She didn’t cry right away; she just kind of went blank. I will never forget the look on her face as long as I live.”

“I stood up and told them they were disgusting. My mom kept saying they thought being honest would help everyone move forward. My dad said they just wanted to stop living a lie.”

He can’t believe that their parents thought this was acceptable to say out loud. He grabbed his sister, said they had to get out of there, and they drove back to college that evening.

The following morning, he sent their parents a text to say he was cutting them out of his life, and he didn’t want them to contact him or show up on his doorstep.

Now, he and his sister have a place to live together, and she’s been seeing a therapist to help her process the sad reality that’s been dumped on her. Sometimes, she’s fine, and other days, she can’t bring herself to get out of bed.

He cut back on his classes this semester so he can be at home more to support his sister. Their parents haven’t listened and have tried to contact him multiple times.

“My mom sends these long texts about how she loves us both and didn’t mean for it to come out that way. The part that messes me up is [that] I benefited from all of this,” he continued.

“Every extra thing they gave me was something they were taking from her. And I didn’t do enough about it for years. I just quietly felt bad while accepting everything they handed me.”

“Am I wrong?”

No, he’s not wrong! Their parents are monsters for admitting to his sister that they never wanted her, and their dose of honesty has crushed, not helped her.

Their mom clearly does not love her at all, so it’s laughable that she’s backtracking like that in the texts she’s sent. It’s not his fault that their mom and dad loved him and resented his sister.

Their parents don’t deserve them, and they should both stay out of their lives forever.
