According to a spooky story shared by TikToker Neila (@rebekahjourney), one woman’s seven-year marriage came crashing down because of what she found in their basement.
When Laura met her now ex-husband, Marcus, she was immediately attracted to him. He was charming and successful but also very private.
She knew that he was a freemason because he attended meetings a few times a month and wore a ring with a square and compass symbol. After they got married, strange things started happening.
Sometimes, he would leave the house after midnight and return just before sunrise. When she would question him about his whereabouts, he simply kissed her on the forehead and told her not to worry.
He would also receive suspicious phone calls. After his phone rang once, he would look at it and leave the room immediately.
One night, she woke up, and he wasn’t in bed. She found him in the backyard staring up at the moon. She called his name twice before he answered. When he turned around, he had a blank expression on his face, which freaked her out.
“She said she doesn’t know much about freemasonry or what they do in their meetings,” said Neila. “So, she convinces herself that maybe she’s just being paranoid.”
Then, Laura’s grandmother passed away, and something really weird happened at the funeral. An older man approached Laura, took one look at Marcus, and became pale-faced. He asked Laura if she was married to him. After she answered yes, he walked away.
A few months later, Marcus left for an emergency meeting. He forgot his laptop. At first, Laura used the laptop to search for recipes they had saved, but then, she discovered a hidden folder. She clicked on it and came across hundreds of photographs.

“There were pictures of men standing in dark robes,” narrated Neila. “There were pictures taken inside weird buildings, only lit by candles; there were pictures of different symbols painted on floors, pictures of people wearing masks, and these were very creepy masks.”
Finally, Laura saw one picture that gave her the chills. It was a photo of them on their wedding day. Marcus was standing at the altar, smiling, but behind her stood 12 men dressed in black robes, concealed in the shadows.
That night, Laura was unable to sleep. She heard the sound of footsteps coming from downstairs. She grabbed her flashlight and followed the sound, which led her to the basement. The basement door was somehow open, and the light switch wasn’t working for some reason.
The beam of her flashlight shone on the wall, and she suddenly noticed a section of shelving she had never paid attention to in the past. Behind it was a small door. She opened it and found a small room with written symbols all over the walls and melted candles on the floor.
There was a wooden box in the center of the room. Inside the box, there were more photographs. They were of strangers, of her when she was sleeping, at work, and from before she had even met Marcus. At the bottom of the box was a note written in Marcus’s handwriting. It read, “Selected, approved, accept it.”
Laura went back to bed and pretended like nothing had happened. When Marcus returned home, he went down to the basement. Then, he started asking Laura questions.
She confessed to finding the wooden box in the basement. He didn’t look angry or disappointed, but she felt like she had ruined something.
He told her that she wasn’t supposed to find that stuff until later and refused to explain further. She was so frustrated and freaked out that she packed a bag and left the next morning.
Within six months, they got divorced. He never argued about it. He just agreed to it. After everything was finalized, Laura moved three states away for a fresh start.
Nearly a year later, she opened her mailbox one afternoon and pulled out a plain white envelope containing a single photograph. To this day, she still doesn’t know what it means and is afraid to find out.
