What’s the worst surprise you can get on a first date? For TikToker Isabelle (@belletreat), it was walking into a group date she never agreed to.
She matched with a guy online, and they texted and video chatted throughout the week. They were both clearly interested in each other.
He originally wanted to meet up for dinner, but his hair appointment ran late, so they planned for brunch the next morning. He made reservations for noon.
When she arrived, she was super excited because he was cute in person. But things went downhill the moment they started walking to their seats. He told the server that there were going to be four people dining in today.
Isabelle giggled a little at first, thinking he was joking, but she quickly realized that he was serious. She was caught off guard that he had invited other people on their first date.
Apparently, his friend was also going on a first date, so they decided to merge their first-date plans into one. Now, Isabelle was suddenly expected to meet two new people on a first double date, which was not what she had signed up for.
The issue wasn’t just the double date itself. It was also the lack of consent. She hadn’t even been given a choice or a heads-up. She did not hesitate to speak up for herself.
“He was very apologetic, obviously, once I told him that this is not what I came here for, and I’m going to go,” said Isabelle.
“He was like, yeah, please leave before my friends get here, so I can make an excuse on why you left.”

That did not sit right with her. She demanded that he tell the truth about how he had blindsided and lied to her. Then, she got up and made a clean exit, choosing to enjoy the rest of the day on her own terms instead of wasting it on a random double date and forcing herself to sit through an awkward situation.
Plenty of people had their opinions, which they shared in the comments section, and some had surprisingly similar stories.
“Lowkey would have waited for them and then asked the girl if she was aware, and if not, if she wanted to go do something together,” commented one person.
“This happened to me! I stayed, and nine years later, she and I are best friends, and that was our last night out with both of those guys!” exclaimed another.
“I would have stayed and acted more interested in his buddy than him,” stated a third.
“Girl, this happened to me before. First date, get to the restaurant and find out we’re having dinner with his family!” chimed in someone else.
