Every couple has that one argument that seems completely trivial on the surface, leaving socks on the floor, the way the dishwasher is loaded, or neglecting to clean out the dryer lint.

But underneath the smallest disagreement, it’s usually about something much bigger, like communication, trust, or respect.

TikToker Cassity Irvin (@cassityirvin) and her ex-boyfriend broke up over a bag of chips. While the breakup may have technically been sparked by a bag of chips, the real issue had nothing to do with potato chips at all.

One day, they were hanging out, and she fell asleep on the couch. He went to work that night. When she woke up the next morning, she was feeling a little hungry and wanted a snack. She looked for her bag of chips, but couldn’t find it anywhere.

So, she texted her boyfriend, asking where her chips were and if he had eaten them. He told her that he had eaten some, and the bag was probably on the counter or on top of the fridge. The chips were nowhere to be found.

She later sent him another text, telling him that it was okay if he ate her food, but he should just let her know about it next time. He insisted that he hadn’t eaten her whole bag of chips.

The next night, he came over. They were sitting on the couch, watching TV. Cassity tried to look for the remote control, and when she dug through the couch cushions, she ended up pulling out a half-eaten bag of chips.

After the discovery, she noticed that her boyfriend was growing more distant. So, of course, she called him up and asked him what was going on.

“He says, ‘Honestly, the fact that you accused me of eating your chips when I said I didn’t, and then you found them, and you didn’t apologize; it was a big red flag for me, and it just changed everything,'” said Cassity.

“Essentially, it changed a lot in his mind. This phone call goes on for a while until I basically get to the point where I’m crying and saying sorry for the 20th time.”

She drove to his apartment so they could talk in person. They got into a heated argument over this bag of chips. He cursed at her, but immediately apologized afterward.

However, Cassity still felt extremely disrespected. Ultimately, she chose to leave the relationship, which was probably for the best.

“He apologized, and we talked the next day, and it just, in my brain, came down to the fact that our communication styles are very different, so I ended things,” said Cassity.

“So, that’s the story of how my relationship ended over a bag of chips.”
