Mom Pushing For Edibles To Come In Different Packaging After Her Daughter Ate One Thinking It Was Candy And Almost Died
Jacksonville, Florida. Morgan McCoy is a mom on a mission. She’s now pushing for edibles to come in different packaging after her daughter ate one thinking it was candy and almost died.
Over Memorial Day weekend, Morgan, her husband, and her daughter took a trip to her in-law’s home in Jacksonville. They were throwing a party with around 30 to 40 guests.
Morgan and her family normally stay in a specific room in her in-law’s house, but this time they had friends staying there, so they switched to another room.
“This friend has 2 children,” Morgan explained. “One of them had taken a running dive into the pool but alas… this child is two… so the parent went for a swim while fully clothed to get their child.”
“They had this bag of gummies (well gummy, singular) in their pocket. Frazzled, I’m sure, they ran in and got out of the wet clothes.. grabbed the bag and put it in the dresser between some clothes while they went to change.”
“My…daughter went in looking for HER clothes, because this is the room she normally stays in… she came across the bag and, like any 6-year-old would…”
“She ate the candy.”
The thing is though, this wasn’t a bag of normal candy; it was a bag of edibles that was legally purchased by the friends as far as Morgan knows.

A few hours after the incident in the pool, Morgan is hanging out when one of the friends staying in the guest room they usually are in announces to Morgan they think her daughter ate an edible.
“I ran inside and calmly picked her up and moved her from the ground to the couch,” Morgan said.
“She couldn’t open her eyes, she was completely non-responsive and when I laid her down she kind of braced herself like she felt like she was falling.”
Morgan screamed for her mother-in-law to dial 911 and get help, and then her daughter started seizing.
She scooped her up in her arms and raced outside, hoping the ambulance would arrive quickly.
Morgan’s daughter ended up spending the whole night in the hospital, and there really wasn’t much that could be done for her.
“All they could do was monitor her and give her fluids. I was up all night with my husband watching those machines,” Morgan continued.
“Her breaths per minute would drop to single digits at times, her heart rate would shoot up to alarming levels at others.”
“It was one of the scariest moments of my life and I never want another parent to go through that. The next one may not be so lucky.”
“I want it to be abundantly clear that this other Parent did something that ANYONE could do, and we all have done.”
“This is not about them, trust me when I say, they have suffered enough. No one was arrested, DCF cleared the case in 3 minutes and was shocked at the picture of the candy.”
Morgan pointed out that if the edibles had come in a different package, her daughter would not have stopped and thought to eat it.
She noted that laundry pods and vitamins come in safe packaging, but edibles currently don’t and can be sold in packaging that really does look just like candy.
Following this heartstopping incident, Morgan is fighting to get regulations in place so that she can prevent someone else from going through this.
You have to admit, the packaging Morgan showed does look exactly like candy, and how can a child know the difference?
