She Was Last Seen Walking Alone Near A Highway As She Held A Piece Of Paper And Then This 16-Year-Old Disappeared
Chalfant Valley, California. On October 13th, 2018, 16-year-old Karlie Gusé was seen by several different people walking down a street not far from where she lived in Chalfant Valley, California.
Everyone who saw her walking down the street towards Highway 6 that Saturday around dawn said she held a piece of paper as she went along somewhat disorientedly.
Highway 6 runs all the way from Bishop, California (Karlie lived around 10 miles north of where the highway started), to Massachusetts.
But why would Karlie be headed alone towards the highway? Right outside of Karlie’s town, it goes right into the barren desert of Nevada.

Karlie’s family reported her as missing later on in the day, and among them her stepmom Melissa was the last person to see Karlie at home.
At first, Melissa said she woke up around 5:30 the morning Karlie disappeared and she noticed her step-daughter was in bed, lying down and awake.
Melissa went back to bed, woke up again at 7:15, and Karlie was nowhere to be found. However, all of her things were still in the house, like her cellphone. That’s certainly something you would think a person would take with them if they planned on leaving home.
Then, Melissa told a different story of what happened that morning. Speaking to Dr. Phil, she explained she was sleeping in the same bed as Karlie and was upset to wake up and find her step-daughter not there.

Melissa also said Karlie had a really rough night in the hours before she left home. Apparently, she had gone to a party with her boyfriend and while she was there, she smoked Marijuana.
By 8 p.m. that night, she had phoned up Melissa and asked to be picked up. Melissa drove out to come get her, but Karlie had left the party.

Melissa eventually found her sprinting down a pitch dark road, but Karlie did get into Melissa’s car. She then told Melissa she thought she was going to be killed by the car.
Melissa would later say that Karlie was acting quite strangely and she thought she was on some kind of drugs. She was exhilarated, then paranoid, then exhilarated all over again.
Karlie’s behavior was all over the map, her pupils were enormous, and when Melissa insisted she eat a salad when they arrived home, Karlie told her it was “devil’s lettuce.”
Melissa also made a recording of what Karlie was babbling about, hoping she could play it back to her when she felt better and point out how drugs really alter your personality in the hopes that she wouldn’t do them again.
On the recording, Karlie says to Melissa, “Am I going to live until tomorrow?”
“I love you.”
“Are you going to call 911?”
“I’m so glad you came.”
When Karlie was seen walking towards the highway just hours later, witnesses noted her clothing. She was wearing grey sweatpants, a white t-shirt, and Vans shoes.
A lot of internet users have taken issue with what Melissa said she was last wearing: skinny jeans.
Clarifying that in an interview with Nancy Grace, Melissa noted, “I only said that because she always wears her skinny jeans. So I just assumed she had her skinny jeans on.”

An extensive search followed Karlie’s disappearance, but no clues have turned up, and neither has she.
Was Karlie disoriented due to what she had taken at the party? Did someone kidnap her as she walked along, all alone?
The Mono County Sheriff’s Office took to Facebook on December 3rd, 2018 to say, “Karlie Gusé is still missing. There are no updates to report. What’s important is finding Karlie.”
“Continue to share her photos and the Missing Person Flyer. Hold her family in your hearts, as they are all hurting. And if Karlie is reading this, please know that you can come home. Go to your nearest law enforcement officer, and we will come get you and bring you home.”
“We are aware that many people from outside of our area are following this case. If anyone believes they see Karlie somewhere outside of Mono County, please call the local law enforcement to respond.”
“The responding law enforcement can contact our Dispatch for photos and any other needed additional information. If Karlie is found, the Mono County Sheriff’s Office will come pick up her up and bring her home.”
“This is an active investigation. As stated previously, we will not release any details of our investigation unless those details will help locate Karlie. We know that many are questioning what investigative steps we have taken.”
“We read the speculation and hear the accusations. This “trial by social media” will not direct our investigation, nor will we compromise our investigation to satisfy public curiosity.”
