She Was Just About To Graduate High School When She Was Abducted And Later Found Burned In The Woods: After 32 Years Her Murder Has Still Not Been Solved

Hazlehurst, Georgia. Rhonda Sue Coleman was 18-years-old and living in Hazlehurst back in 1990.

She lived with her mom and dad, she was an only child, and she was more of a tomboy than a girly-girl.

Weeks before Rhonda was set to walk across the graduation stage at Jeff Davis High School wearing her cap and gown, her life was ended.

It was May 17th when Rhonda met up with a few of her fellow classmates that night to complete some things for their upcoming graduation.

After wrapping things up for the evening, Rhonda got into her car and began her drive home, but she never did make it.

She was last spotted dropping one of her friends off at a Hazlehurst store before continuing home at 11 p.m.

At some point that evening, someone had abducted Rhonda right out of her car, which was found hours after she went missing on the side of a highway. Her car hadn’t been turned off and all of the lights were on.

3 days later, Rhonda’s body was sadly found in the woods of a nearby county.

“She had been murdered, her body dumped in a wooded area and burned in an attempt to conceal any evidence,” a change.org petition for Rhonda explained.

The petition goes on to say that there were residents of Hazlehurst who knew exactly what happened to Rhonda, yet there was never enough evidence to bring her killers to justice.

Her case went cold.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation did do an autopsy on Rhonda, though they could not find her cause of death.

Rhonda’s family helped to recently create a podcast called Foxhunter dedicated to solving Rhonda’s murder, and through that process, they found a major problem with Rhonda’s case in 2017.

Apparently, authorities had Rhonda’s fingernail clippings, but they had not tested them to see if DNA was present.

It’s now been 32 years since Rhonda was found murdered, and her case still remains unsolved.

On the Foxhunter podcast’s website, it reads, “The murder of 18-year-old Rhonda Sue Coleman in Hazlehurst, Georgia has remained unsolved for over 30 years despite leads, eyewitness accounts and evidence.”

“There are several main suspects who police and investigators believe could have acted alone or together in the murder – all of which still live in the general area.”

“Police feel strongly that there are people still in the area who know exactly what happened, but are not talking for various reasons, be it fear of retaliation or perhaps guilt for holding this information for so long without coming forward.”

If you have any information related to Rhonda’s case, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is asking that you call them at 912.389.4103.
