She’s Refusing To Bake Her Friend’s Wedding Cake Because Her Friend Only Wants To Pay $150
This thirty-two-year-old woman has known her friend, Ashley, since they were little kids. And now, Ashley is about to get married during the first week of November. What’s even more exciting is that she will be a bridesmaid at Ashley’s wedding.
The pair have been loving talking about all things wedding planning for the past year, too, since she also recently got married in April.
But Ashley dropped some pretty bad news on her about a week ago, and it quickly became her problem.
Apparently, the baker who was supposed to make Ashley’s wedding cake is moving away. So, Ashley got refunded but was left without a cake reservation just a month and a half before the wedding.
However, she is a pretty talented cake decorator herself. Her career was in teaching, and she is now working as a school administrator, but at one point in her life, she worked at high-end bakeries. Plus, she often makes cakes out of her house just for fun.
So, if you could not have guessed it, Ashley asked if she would be willing to bake her wedding cake.
“At first, I declined since I never make cakes for large events. But, with the date coming up and her not being able to find anyone, I caved,” she recalled.
But, Ashley’s dessert preferences were no small order. She was expected to make a four-tier cake with four different flavors. On top of that, Ashley wanted one hundred cupcakes with twenty-five of each flavor.
Plus, the decorations Ashley asked for require her to order specialty molds and even hand-paint some of the cake in gold. So, her estimated total cost for the cake came out to eight hundred and twenty-five dollars– which was one hundred dollars higher than Ashley’s previous baker.

So, Ashley was pretty ticked off. In fact, she even got accused of overcharging her friend.
“But, I showed her the price breakdown. I used the same pricing system as one of the bakeries I worked at, and it wasn’t even the most expensive one,” she explained.
“I also told her I would do it for the other quote if she was strapped for money. But then, Ashley asked me to do it for only one hundred and fifty dollars.” Yikes!
She was totally taken aback and asked Ashley why in the world she would ever create such an elaborate wedding dessert for that little.
And Ashley apparently claimed she should get the cheaper rate since they are friends and that she should think of it as a “wedding gift.” But, the real truth is that Ashley wanted to use the leftover cash to upgrade her honeymoon hotel.
Anyway, she reiterated that Ashley was already getting a good deal since she was willing to lower her price point to the previous baker’s. Ashley still did not understand, though.
Instead, Ashley began referencing how she made her sister’s cake for free a few years ago and how she makes birthday and anniversary cakes for her family all the time.
“But, I told her family and friends are not the same. Plus, I had more time to make my sister’s cake as I had fewer responsibilities as a teacher back then compared to what I do now,” she said.
Regardless, they continued having a back-and-forth argument over the past until she finally put her foot down and said, “The discount is you get 0% off 100% of the time, and if you keep bothering me, I’ll even add tax.”
Obviously, Ashley did not like her response and ended up telling the entire bridal party about what she had said. So now, she is getting hounded by nine other women who are urging her to drop the price.
In fact, the other bridesmaids are even claiming that she doesn’t need the money as much as Ashley does since her parents paid for her wedding.
On the other hand, though, Ashley’s sister, the maid of honor, does agree that Ashley is being unreasonable. Plus, her husband has gone a bit further and actually encouraged her to drop out of the wedding.
Apparently, he believes that Ashley is acting totally entitled and does not even deserve her attendance at the ceremony.
So now, all of this mixed feedback has made her completely confused about what to do.
She realizes that paying one hundred and fifty dollars for a cake and that many cupcakes are unheard of. And more importantly, her materials and time are not cheap.
But, at the same time, she knows that Ashley’s wedding is coming up super soon and that she is the last resort for her cake.
So, she is not sure if refusing to bake the cake at an ultra-discounted rate was the wrong thing to do.
If you were in her shoes, would you refuse to bake the cake also? Do you think Ashley even has that much bargaining power with her wedding approaching so soon?
