Her Male Roommate Has Really Bad Hygiene, And Their Apartment Is Starting To Smell Like His Dirty Laundry

This 23-year-old girl has a male roommate the same age as her, and he moved into her apartment about 3 months back.

Her roommate’s bedroom is technically their living room, so although part of that room is a space they share, the other part is where he sleeps.

Prior to allowing her roommate to move in with her, she was friends with him, and it was never news to her that he’s a pretty messy kind of guy.

Unfortunately, the level of messy that her roommate is happens to be out of control and way worse than she anticipated.

Everything started off great, though, and her roommate needed to wait for a week for his furniture to arrive.

So, while he waited, he slept on her couch. As soon as her roommate’s bed, desk, and computer arrived, their whole apartment began to smell.

“It smells like dirty laundry, B.O.; just funky and disgusting,” she explained. “The smell is so strong too. I had noticed this smell before.”

“He used a blanket on the couch ONCE, and after that, it started to smell like that. That’s how bad it is. Now, I’m a very clean person, and scent is very important to me. I collect perfumes, that should tell you something.”

“This smell made me PANIC, and I immediately told him that it stinks in here, and I refuse to accept that. I noticed that much of the smell is coming from his bed, so I told him to wash his sheets.”

Her roommate informed her that his sheets were brand new, and that’s when it dawned on her that his whole bed is the reason why their apartment stinks.

Her roommate’s mattress, pillows, and blankets all reek. She decided to research how to clean those things in an effort to eradicate the smell, and her roommate complied with cleaning everything. Right after her roommate cleaned every part of his bed, the smell disappeared, but she was disappointed to find that the smell returned a day later.

She then deduced that her roommate’s hygiene was contributing to the aroma, as he never washes his laundry unless she gets after him for it, and she has only seen him brush his teeth one time in the three months that he has lived with her. She sat her roommate down and tried to have a conversation with him about his hygiene, but he shot back at her that he had just showered the day before.

“I said it doesn’t matter if you take a shower if you then proceed to get dressed in your dirty clothes and go lay in your dirty, smelly bed,” she continued.

“He also gets mad when I tell him he smells or the room smells. I get that hygiene is a sensitive topic, but I can’t just pretend that I’m fine with him stinking up the entire apartment. It’s embarrassing at this point.”

“I have not shut up about this issue because I can’t stand it, but nothing has changed. Because he can’t smell it, he doesn’t understand how bad it really is. It feels like I need to mommy him and tell him exactly what he needs to do, otherwise, he won’t do it. It’s just exhausting, and I’m tired of my apartment smelling like a 16-year-old boy.”

She is not able to just go out and get a different roommate at this point in time, so she’s left wondering what she can do about the situation.

What advice do you have for her?
