Have you ever been in a family situation where a sibling or other relative has a baby, and suddenly, you become the ‘go-to’ babysitter?

It can be an uncomfortable position to be in, especially if you’re not a fan of kids and aren’t getting paid for babysitting.

One woman has been trying to take on fewer babysitting gigs for her sister so she can find a job, and it’s causing a lot of family drama.

She’s 21-years-old and graduated from college two months ago. Since then, she’s been staying with her boyfriend at his place, because it’s closer to the city and she’s been looking for a job.

She could stay with her 23-year-old sister, but staying with her sister means she’ll have to constantly babysit her nephew and help take care of her house.

Six months before her last semester of college, her sister had a baby boy with a guy she’s in a band with.

“The two of them have been in a ‘situationship’ for over 2 years since the guy has a wife and kid but still pursued my sister,” she explained.

“Neither of them has a stable income, but my sister really wanted to have a baby with him because he told her he’d leave his wife for her. He didn’t.”

Since her sister gave birth, she’s been called over to babysit during most weekends and whenever her sister has a gig to play at night.

Before she graduated, she was fine with babysitting, as she didn’t have to worry about finding a full-time job yet and had a small crocheting business on the side.

But now she’s graduated, she needs to look for full-time work, and her sister has never paid her for babysitting.

“This has been an issue for a while now, and I’ve brought it up to my parents before, but my mom tells me to just deal with it and work it out with my sister, and my dad just thinks it’s a pity that my sister has to send her baby to a friend instead of having me babysit,” she said.

Whenever she’s brought up her issues directly to her sister, her sister has complained about never having enough money to pay her or anyone else for babysitting, even though she knows whenever her sister does come into money, she spends it on music equipment.

Recently, she had to put her foot down when her sister asked her to babysit her nephew for five days.

She told her sister since she wasn’t feeling very well, she’d only babysit for two days and then hand off the baby to her sister’s friend for the rest of the time.

Her sister seemed okay with the arrangement, but then she found out her sister had gone and complained to their parents.

When her parents found out that she was refusing to babysit for all five days and was staying at her boyfriend’s instead of her sister’s place to help out, they were furious.

She tried explaining that she does still help out with the baby and only stays with her boyfriend whenever she isn’t babysitting, but that wasn’t good enough for them.

Since then, her parents have been trying to convince her to stay with her sister full-time so she can help with her nephew.

“I’ve told them I don’t want to be stuck babysitting a baby when it’s not my responsibility, and it’s not like she pays me to help her,” she added.

Still, her parents believe she’s a jerk for not helping her sister more than she already is.

Should she move in with her sister, or should she keep distancing herself so she can have her own life?
