If you’re someone’s step-parent, you know how difficult it can be to form a relationship with them, especially if they’re defiant.

One woman has been struggling to bond with her manipulative stepdaughter and recently upset her after telling her she doesn’t love her as much as her biological daughter.

She’s 52 and has been married to her husband for the last five years. They each have one daughter from previous marriages, hers being 25 years old and his being 22. Her husband divorced his ex-wife seven years ago and claimed she was lazy and manipulative.

Unfortunately, her stepdaughter has seemed to follow in her mom’s footsteps and has never been open to forming a relationship with her. In fact, her stepdaughter has treated her pretty horribly since she married her dad.

“Ever since I came into the picture, she blamed me for ruining any chance of her dad and mom ever getting back together and behaved [toxic],” she explained.

“She regularly messed up all the rooms of the house. When I would tell her to clean it up, she gave me the cliched ‘you’re not my mom’ spiel.”

On top of everything, her stepdaughter would lie about her and throw tantrums whenever her dad didn’t give her what she wanted. Things got so bad that when she turned 19, her husband had to kick her stepdaughter out of their house.

Things have gotten somewhat better over the last few years since she and her stepdaughter don’t have to see each other every day, but there’s still tension between them.

Now, both her daughter and stepdaughter have young children. Her daughter is married with a two-year-old daughter, and her stepdaughter has a one-year-old son with her boyfriend.

Recently, her daughter contacted her and asked if she could watch her granddaughter while she goes to work. Since she works from home part-time, she agreed to watch her.

Her stepdaughter eventually found out about the arrangement and asked if she could babysit her son along with her granddaughter.

“I just said no,” she said.

“It’s not that I hate her kid; it’s because one child is a handful already, and I don’t want to give up my job, which I enjoy doing. She kept probing, but I still gave her the same response. She then tried to emotionally manipulate me by asking if I loved my bio-daughter more than her.”

She then flipped the question on her stepdaughter and asked if she loved her more than her biological mom. When her stepdaughter said no because her mom is her mom, she said the same thing about her biological daughter. She said she loves her biological daughter more because she’s her daughter.

Her stepdaughter began freaking out and called her a bunch of names, so she hung up and blocked her number.

“My husband is on my side but says I shouldn’t have indulged in her nonsense,” she recalled.

“I see where he’s coming from, but she’s an adult, and if she wants to play stupid games, then she deserves stupid prizes. I don’t owe her any favors after how she’s behaved and treated me over the years, but I’m wondering if I shouldn’t have said what I said.”

Was she wrong to say that to her stepdaughter?
