If you went through a difficult divorce, did you have to fight to get back something that you had purchased or owned before you married your ex?

One woman is getting ready to sue her ex-husband and his new girlfriend after he could not give her back the two expensive rings she had inherited from her mom.

She’s 27-years-old and lost her mom a year ago. Her mom’s death wasn’t sudden, so she had time to distribute her assets and get her estate in order.

“My mom divided up the jewelry my dad had gotten her over the years to give us if she passed,” she recalled.

“I had picked out two rings I had helped my dad pick out. They were not cheap. [They cost] about $10,000 a piece when I got them appraised.”

Not long after her mom passed, she decided she needed to leave her 30-year-old husband. It was one of those moments where she hardly had any time to pack up her things; she simply needed to leave their house, move to a different state, and file for divorce.

Her ex-husband kept some of their things, but in their divorce agreement, they decided that some of her more valuable items needed to be held in their security deposit box until she could collect them.

After their divorce was finalized, she returned to her old house to gather the rest of her things, including her inherited rings, out of their safety deposit box. However, when she arrived, she saw that her husband had only put random jewelry in the box.

Then, she shockingly discovered that her husband had brought the two rings to his new 21-year-old girlfriend’s apartment for “safe keeping.”

[She] says she had them in her jewelry box for safekeeping, but she can’t find them,” she explained.

“She knew what they were according to texts I have, and [she knew] that they were not his nor a gift.”

“I talked to my divorce lawyer, and he’s filing a lawsuit since inheritance is not marital property, and my ex did not follow his end of the divorce decree. I’m asking for $25,000 [which equals] the cost of the rings plus emotional damages for the loss of the only things I have left from my mom.”

She was so upset that she also decided to file a police report against her ex’s girlfriend as she believed this was a case of theft.

Although she imagines not much will come out of the police report, her ex and his girlfriend are being investigated.

Now, her ex and his girlfriend are furious with her, as they can’t afford to pay her $25,000 and believe she’s made too big of a deal over a couple of rings.

Her ex’s friends, who she hasn’t spoken to since the divorce, have begun harassing her and leaving her nasty messages.

“I wish I could get the rings back, but I’m so upset over this whole attitude that I want to basically go scorched earth on them,” she added.

Should she feel bad for taking legal action against her ex, or is it the right thing to do?
