Red Lipstick Is A Timeless Look, And Here’s Your Guide For How To Properly Apply It

When Valentine’s Day rolls around, we express our love through red and pink! We buy red and pink cards, wear red or pink sweaters, and have a lot of fun with a bright red lip.
The red lip is a timeless makeup look that can take any look to the next level. We’ve seen Taylor Swift rocking red lipstick at the Super Bowl, generations of YouTube beauty creators and influencers promoting all kinds of red lipsticks, and watched how wearing red lipstick evolved over the years.
While there are so many methods for applying red lipstick and making it last, here are a few basic tips for wearing a great red lip this Valentine’s Day and any other day you want to feel extra lovely.
Prep your lips
It’s never a bad idea to prep your lips by exfoliating and hydrating them before creating a great lip look.
Use a gentle lip scrub or exfoliant and follow that up with your go-to chapstick or lip balm to prep your lips and help your red lipstick last longer.
Use lip liner
For years, I would wear red lipstick without using a red lip liner, and it would always make my makeup look incomplete.
While there’s nothing wrong with wearing red lipstick or lip gloss without liner, it will look 10x better if you add it.

After priming, line your lips with a lip liner that’s identical to your favorite red lip shade, or you can use one that’s oh so slightly darker. Build out your desired shape, and you’ll soon have a guide for applying your lipstick.
Time for the lipstick
Using the lipstick itself, a brush, or your finger, apply your favorite red lipstick to your lips and blend it into your lip liner.
Some people find it easier to start toward the center of their lips and then work their way out to avoid smudging excess product on the corners of their mouths.
Double-check the shape
Once your lipstick is on, you’ll want to closely check out the outline of your lips and ensure everything looks how you want it to.
For instance, sometimes, we go in too hard with the lipstick and smudge the outline of our lips. Now is the time to blend things out and make sure the shape of your lips is how you want it.
Blot and clean up
Use a tissue to blot your lipstick by placing a folded tissue between your lips and pressing them down.
This gets rid of any excess product that could smudge your lips or end up on your teeth! Then, to make things look extra clean and sharp, touch up the edges of your lips with a bit of concealer or foundation.
There you go! Now, you know the basics for applying a red lip that will steal people’s hearts and make you look extra festive this Valentine’s Day. Enjoy!
