Six years ago, this 42-year-old man lost his wife, Kate. It took him a couple of years to put himself out there and start dating, and with the first two girlfriends he had, things ended pretty quickly, so he never ended up introducing them to his 16-year-old daughter Sally.

Then, he met a 35-year-old woman named Liz back in November, and he introduced her to Sally a month ago. He was not shocked when Sally wasn’t that nice to Liz.

Sally wasn’t exactly mean, but she treated Liz in a pretty cold manner. Liz took everything in stride and attempted to get Sally to open up by talking with her about music, books, and movies.

Sally wasn’t interested in being friendly, and she simply responded to everything Liz said with a single word and nothing more.

He and Liz were fully aware that it would take Sally some time to come around to there being another woman in his life.

Several weeks ago, Liz dropped by his house to have dinner with him, and she was thrilled to show him her high school yearbook that she had come across.

They flipped through the pages and made jokes about the hairstyles in there and such. One particular photo had a heart drawn over it, and Sally asked why that was. Liz replied that the guy in the photo was her first boyfriend.

“Two days ago, Sally comes to me, telling me she saw Liz “cheating on me” with some random dude,” he explained.

“At no point did I believe my daughter about this. She said she saw her kissing and hugging some guy at the park, and it was just obviously not true. Just the fact she said she saw her at the park was enough to know she was lying. Liz has seasonal allergies; you couldn’t pay her to go to a park in spring.”

“I feel like she wasn’t even really trying to convince me; maybe she was just trying to start a fight. I don’t know how to explain it. There was no concern in her voice like you’d think she would be upset someone is cheating on her dad, right? No, she sounded annoyed that I was asking questions and poking holes in her story.”

He instantly phoned Liz to fill her in before reassuring her that he wasn’t buying Sally’s story at all. He did ask Liz to come by his house so they could sit down and talk to Sally as a team.

Liz arrived, and then asked Sally to sit on the couch and explain to her what it was that she believed she saw happen in the park.

Sally stated that she saw Liz kissing some tall, random man, and Sally went on to describe Liz’s high school boyfriend from the heart-outlined yearbook photo.

Liz responded by letting Sally know how let down she was that she couldn’t have come up with something more creative than lying about her cheating with the guy from her yearbook.

Liz continued, saying she didn’t even go to high school in the state they live in, so the chances of running into her high school boyfriend in their zip code were basically zero.

Liz finished by saying her high school boyfriend was an awful person, and she couldn’t be paid enough to go anywhere near him today.

Sally sat there silently and stared into her lap. Liz got up, said she required a couple of moments to gather her thoughts and went to make herself coffee.

A few minutes later, Liz returned, telling Sally she can tell she misses her mom, and if her mom had never passed away, Liz would never have entered their lives.

Liz pointed out to Sally that she was not trying to replace her mom at all; she was only hoping they could all have a great relationship.

Liz added that if she was Kate, she would have wanted her husband to find a woman to be his companion and teammate because nothing is worse than being alone in life.

“And then she tells me, “I am 35-years-old, I am way, way too…old to be playing this kind of he said, she said drama,” he continued.

“I really wanted us to work out, but not at the risk of your relationship with your daughter; I tried telling her that we can work this out, but she reminded me that I have known her for less than one year.”

Liz also chimed in that it wasn’t worth him ruining his relationship with Sally, as she is the “last piece” that he has of Kate.

Liz grabbed her keys and purse before walking out the door. So, she dumped him over the drama with Sally.

He has tried to call and text her, and she keeps saying no to getting together to talk, or she ignores him entirely.

“I was left…speechless,” he said. “I still can’t even look at my daughter. I understand she’s struggling, but I feel 16 is old enough to know…better.”

“I changed the password to the WiFi. We live in a rural area, and without WiFi, she might as well not even have electricity. What do I do? How do I handle this?”
