She Wore Her Mother-In-Law’s Wedding Dress After Her Sister-In-Law Gained Weight And Couldn’t Fit Into It, So Her Sister-In-Law Accused Her Of Stealing The Family Tradition

This 28-year-old woman and her husband, 28, have been together for quite a while, and she has a close bond with his family. His mother treats her like a daughter, and she feels grateful she didn’t wind up with a mean mother-in-law.
Her sister-in-law recently married a wonderful man. Since her husband’s mom hung onto her wedding dress, she always hoped her daughter could take pictures while wearing the dress.
In the months before the wedding, her mother-in-law mentioned the idea several times, stating that even though she didn’t want her daughter walking down the aisle in the dress, she wanted photos of her daughter wearing it.
“I was at a dinner party when they were discussing it, and I guess my mother-in-law felt guilty that I never wore it at my wedding, even though she views me as a daughter,” she said.
While her feelings weren’t hurt, her husband’s mom repeatedly told her she was sorry. Throughout the last few months before her sister-in-law’s wedding, her sister-in-law began gaining weight quickly. According to her husband, his sister struggles with depression and anxiety and uses food to cope.
Because her sister-in-law’s dress was tailored, it wasn’t too tight on her wedding day, but when she tried on her mother’s dress, it was too tight. Even though she and her mom were upset that they couldn’t take photos of her in the dress, they moved forward with the rest of her wedding day as planned.
“After my sister-in-law returned from her honeymoon, my mother-in-law asked her if she thought she’d ever lose weight and put on the dress. I will admit, the way she asked at dinner, with everyone around, was rude and awkward,” she explained.
In response, her husband’s sister suggested tailoring the dress so she could fit into it, but her mother-in-law rejected the idea, stating she could hang onto the dress so that future grandchildren could maybe wear it someday.
A week later, her mother-in-law asked her to come to her house. Once she arrived, her husband’s mom expressed how desperately she hoped for a daughter to try on her wedding dress and her concern that she wouldn’t be alive long enough for a granddaughter to wear it.

According to her mother-in-law, it was “her dream” for a family member to wear her wedding dress, so she said she could try it on so they could take photos.
The dress was too tight for her, so they kept the dress unzipped for the photos, ensuring to take pictures only from angles where no one could tell the dress wasn’t zipped from the back. Later, her mother-in-law developed the photos, framed them, and hung them on the wall in her home.
Everybody saw and admired the photos during the next family dinner at her in-laws’ house. Several family members said it was a wonderful “tradition” and that she looked beautiful in the dress. Her sister-in-law didn’t chime in, so she thought she was depressed seeing the photos.
After dinner, she and her husband drove home, and his sister called him in tears. While venting, her sister-in-law told her husband she was cruel and inconsiderate for taking the chance to wear the dress away from her.
Her husband didn’t include everything his sister said on the phone because she bad-mouthed her throughout the call.
When she texted her husband’s mom to find out if everything was all right, her mother-in-law urged her not to be concerned because her daughter was overdramatic.
However, she felt guilty because the “tradition” her mother-in-law wanted to start was supposed to be with a daughter, so it made sense that her sister-in-law was upset.
“Usually, I tend to think I’m always right, but I do think I maybe should have declined my mother-in-law’s request. I acknowledge that I should have handled this differently. At the time, I truly didn’t think it was that big of a deal,” she shared.
In her opinion, her mother-in-law isn’t mean to her daughter and doesn’t fat shame her in private. It seems like her sister-in-law and mother-in-law have a close bond and that the whole family is close, especially since the family gets together for dinner every Friday night.
Plus, her husband’s mom and sister attend church every Sunday and have dinner together.
She asked her sister-in-law to come over for dinner to chat, and her sister-in-law accepted the invitation. Later, her husband’s sister texted her to say sorry for calling her brother to vent about the situation instead of discussing her frustrations with her.
Her sister-in-law added that she was incredibly upset at the time, but recently she has settled down. She planned to wait until dinner to continue the discussion with her sister-in-law. Upon reflection, she didn’t think her actions were purposefully spiteful.
The reason she agreed to wear her mother-in-law’s wedding dress was because it was her husband’s mom’s wish to see a daughter in the dress before she passed away.
It could be 20 years before a grandchild could try on the dress, and since her mother-in-law didn’t want anyone to tailor the dress, she didn’t think there was any harm in wearing the dress and taking photos.
What would you have done if you’d been in her shoes?
