Have you ever heard somebody call their coworker their “work husband” or “work wife?”

Well, those terms are usually endearing and silly; some people who are actually married find them quite uncomfortable.

One man recently upset his coworker after embarrassing her by calling her his “work sister” after she called him her “work husband.”

He’s 34 and works in a small office with around 30 employees. One of his coworkers is a 35-year-old woman named Mary. He and Mary have worked in the same department for years and have traveled together overseeing different projects.

He’s married, and thankfully, his wife really likes Mary, and so does he.

However, at a recent happy hour gathering in the office, Mary did something that may have compromised their healthy relationship.

He, Mary, and around 10 of their coworkers were enjoying happy hour in the office, sharing drinks and stories.

Mary started getting pretty tipsy and enjoyed telling stories about her travels with him over the years.

It was all pretty innocent initially, with Mary telling stories of his silly traveling habits, like how he always loses things in his hotel rooms.

He also chimed in and enjoyed listening to everyone’s stories about their time on the road for work. Then a drunken Mary went up to him, hugged him tightly, and told him she loved him and that he was her “work husband.”

“It was all innocent on the surface, but she might have been a bit drunk and just didn’t let go of her tight hug,” he said.

“Also, I hate that phrase, as I do have a wife that I promised to be with forever and not just [during] non-working hours.”

After a few moments, he noticed some of his coworkers were staring at him and Mary, so he took her hands off his shoulders and playfully told her she was his “work sister.”

Then, things took a turn for the worse. Mary turned around, sat at her desk, and began sobbing quietly. He tried apologizing, but she snapped at him, telling him he embarrassed her.

He tried to explain that the phrase work husband makes him uncomfortable and told her people were giving them dirty looks when she said it. Therefore, he was just trying to make sure people weren’t suspicious of what she said.

“We talked for a few minutes afterward, and Mary calmed down,” he recalled.

“She hugged me again and left. I felt really guilty afterward because I could see Mary’s point, and I made her sound like a creep by implying that she meant something inappropriate when she called me her work husband.”

Well, he felt bad about embarrassing Mary; he can’t deny that the situation made him uncomfortable.

Should he feel bad for calling Mary his work sister?
