Growing up, TikToker Natasha Zhatko (@natashasonyazhatko) was surrounded by wealth and privilege, and she never had to think about cleaning or chores.

But that all changed when her family lost everything. Now, she's opening up about her family's dramatic fall from wealth, and the experience has been deeply jarring.

"My family went from super rich to super broke practically overnight," said Natasha. "It wasn't really overnight. It was about like a year. Here are some of the most shocking things that I experienced going from super wealthy to having to do everything by myself."

She was never taught how to do anything because she had always been told she would be taken care of her whole life. One of the biggest surprises for her was how fast things get dusty and dirty. Stuff like your toilet and refrigerator need to be cleaned regularly so they don't get all gross.

She used to have housekeepers who cleaned the house every single day. She would leave her room a mess in the morning, and when she came home from school, it would be nice and clean.

Another surprise for her was how expensive food and household items are. Her basement had a fridge filled with drinks, and the freezer was consistently packed with various flavors of ice cream.

There were two fridges upstairs for groceries. That kind of luxury was normal to her. So, when they struggled to afford basic groceries, water, toilet paper, and paper towels, she was thrust into a harsh reality.

Once her family's money was gone, their friends completely disappeared from their lives instead of helping them get back on their feet.

They were close friends, the people who went to her parents' wedding and her bat mitzvah. Natasha and her family stopped getting invitations to social gatherings and events. After that, they learned who their true friends were, as only a few stuck around.

In the comments section, many TikTok users shared similar experiences of financial loss and the painful lessons that came with it.

"This happened to my best friend from college. Her parents were South Florida super-wealthy. I vacationed on their yacht many times. They lost everything, and it was shocking. You would think my friend would be frugal now, but she is really bad with money," commented one user.

"This happened to my son's friend in high school. Her father lost their money, all their vacation homes were gone, no money for her private school and future college," shared another.

"My family went through something similar. I remember my mom telling me she didn't even have change for a Diet Coke in the vending machine, and I just never saw our life playing out that way. I think your kindness and empathy [are] so evident in the way you approach the world. I bet your experience of loss plays a huge role in that," added a third.
