A first date is designed to get to know someone, and it shouldn’t be about surviving a list of insults disguised as conversation starters.

But sometimes, men are so honest to the point of being insulting, and then they act shocked when women don’t applaud them for it. It’s completely fine to not feel a spark on a date, but is it ok to be cruel about it?

A few days ago, this woman went out on a first date with a guy she originally met online. They made plans to get dinner together, and while they were at the restaurant waiting for their food to get to their table, he literally called her fat.

He said she’s larger than what he generally goes for, but that’s code word for chunky, peeps. She sat there, wondering why he asked her out on a date when he knew she wasn’t her type.

“My face fell, and he said, ‘I didn’t mean anything by it, I think you’re pretty.’ We kept talking, but the vibes were already off,” she explained.

“He asked what I liked to do, and I told him art is my passion, that I love to draw/paint, and that I hope to be lucky enough to exhibit work in prestigious galleries in the future.”

“To that, he responded, ‘Don’t you think it’s wiser to focus on a more practical line of work? Art is cool and everything, but most people in it don’t go far. At least not until after they die,’ to which I reply that society devaluing artists is why the world is quite literally losing color and everything is grey and beige.”

I’m surprised she didn’t get up and leave already, and they kept on talking, which only made the date even worse.

The guy questioned her about whether she wanted to have kids, and she told him that she was open to marriage if she found a great guy, but she’s not interested in being a mom.

He responded that it’s a red flag that she does not enjoy kids, and he pressed her about her reasons for not wanting to have children of her own.

She finally worked up the courage to inform this guy that she didn’t see how they were compatible, then said to the waiter that she wanted a to-go box and the check.

She paid for her own dinner and walked right out on him.

“When I got home, I got a text from him saying, ‘I’m sorry if I offended you. Was it the weight comment? I didn’t think you’d be so sensitive.’ I blocked him, but a little voice in my head is making me wonder if I am, in fact, being too sensitive,” she continued.

I think we need to normalize walking out on bad dates, ladies, especially if someone isn’t being kind to you. She did the right thing getting out of there, because a first date is all about making a great first impression, so if this was a view of this guy on his best behavior, I would hate to see him at his worst.
