Arguments between parents and teenagers are a normal part of growing up. Curfews are challenged, friendships are questioned, and emotions often run high.
Most of the time, these arguments end, everyone cools off, and moves on with their day. But for one family, an ordinary disagreement became the last conversation they would ever have with their daughter.
On the morning of November 14, 1988, 16-year-old Shantelle Hudson disappeared after leaving her home in western Nevada at 7:30 a.m. She and her mother had just gotten into an argument.
Apparently, Shantelle had made some friends that her mother didn’t approve of. When Shantelle failed to return, she reported her daughter missing shortly afterward.
Shantelle and her family had recently moved from Bishop, California, to Dayton, Nevada, which only made the timing of the disappearance even more unsettling.
They had only been in Nevada for about two weeks before Shantelle went missing. So, everything in the teenager’s life was still new—the town, the school, and the people she had been meeting.
In the month after she vanished, there were two reported sightings of Shantelle, but the police believe the sightings were misidentifications. No one has heard from Shantelle again. That fact makes it seem less likely her case is just a teenage runaway.
Rumors began to take shape over the years. Some whispered that drugs played a part in her disappearance. However, authorities have never confirmed these claims publicly.
Shantelle may have also been seeing a boy before she disappeared, but he was never identified. Some witnesses reported seeing Shantelle at a Dayton street dance two days after she went missing. Perhaps something happened at the dance.
In 1999, over a decade since she went missing, her case was reopened following an inquiry from one of her relatives. There has not been any activity associated with her Social Security number, and no driver’s licenses have been issued in her name.
The absence of documented activity suggests that she never had the opportunity to build a life as an adult.
At the time of her disappearance, Shantelle stood at approximately five feet and five inches tall and weighed around 120 pounds. She was Native American and had brown hair and brown eyes. She wore eyeglasses and had a scar on her ring finger and a large birthmark at the base of her spine.
Today, Shantelle would be 53 years old. Her mother now lives in Redding, California. The questions surrounding her daughter’s case remain unanswered.
