When TikToker Ruby York (@rubyyork) finally had a meet-cute, she learned the hard way that not every chance meeting actually ends in a cute way.

She used to work at an establishment with high foot traffic. One day, a man came in, they chatted, and sparks flew between them. So, he asked for her phone number. They both seemed familiar to each other, but couldn’t pinpoint where they might’ve met before.

They planned to go out for dinner and drinks. He picked her up for their date, and he took her to a rooftop restaurant/bar. It was 7 p.m., and she had just gotten off work, so she was famished.

However, he told her that he had just eaten, so he wasn’t hungry. That was the first red flag that fluttered into view, throwing the vibes off.

He suggested that they order an appetizer and share it, or she could order a whole meal for herself. They ended up getting two tacos as an appetizer.

She ate one, and of course, was still hungry. She ordered a cocktail, and he got a mocktail because he didn’t drink alcohol.

“I don’t mind if a person doesn’t drink, but in that scenario, I was like, okay, so you just told me you didn’t want to eat, and now you don’t want to drink, but you invited me to dinner and drinks,” Ruby said.

After they ate and drank, he scooted closer to her and pointed at her nose, asking if it was real. Confused, she answered that her nose was real. He proceeded to point at other parts of her face and body to ask if they were real.

Finally, Ruby had had enough and announced that it was time for her to go home. They got in the car, but he started driving somewhere that was not toward the freeway.

When she asked where he was going, he casually informed her that he was headed back to his house. He had never checked with her to make sure this was okay. She demanded that he take her home. It was super weird that he had just assumed she wanted to come over.

“And really, in retrospect, I should have jumped out of the car and called an Uber or called a family member or friend to pick me up because that’s freaking crazy,” said Ruby.

He seemed to feel bad about it and apologized for his rudeness. The whole drive home was really awkward. The next day, he texted her, but she didn’t answer him.

He sent another text, saying that he felt like he had done something wrong. She replied, explaining that he had made her uncomfortable and then blocked him.
