College is costly, so what would you do if you found out that your partner was secretly using your hard-earned money to foot their sibling’s tuition without your permission?

This 25-year-old woman has been dating her 28-year-old boyfriend for the last three years. They both work full-time, but her boyfriend earns approximately 40% more than she does.

“To keep things fair and balanced, we opened a shared digital savings account where we each contribute a strict 50/50 amount monthly,” she said.

“This money is explicitly designated for our weekend dates, vacation funds, and future move-in costs. Because his income is higher, my 50% contribution takes up a massive chunk of my tight monthly salary, but I never complained because I wanted to do my part.”

“A few days ago, I logged into the app to check our balance for an upcoming trip we planned. I noticed that a huge chunk of the money was missing.”

She examined the transaction history more closely to track where the cash was going, and discovered that there were several big transfers going right into her boyfriend’s little sister’s college account.

She instantly confronted her boyfriend, who confessed to using her hard-earned money in their joint account to secretly fund his sister’s college education.

Apparently, her boyfriend’s family has been tight on money and has been unable to pay for his sister’s tuition. She informed her boyfriend that if he’s going to give their money away to his family, then they need to make her monthly contributions to their joint account lower so she’s not stressed out financially.

“He immediately got offended, yelled at me for ‘hating his family,’ and accused me of being financially transactional. I tried explaining to him that I don’t mind him helping his sister, but it shouldn’t come from a shared fund that I am actively struggling to contribute to 50/50,” she added.

“I suggested that he use his personal savings instead, or that we pause the joint contributions entirely for a few months. He completely refused, called me unsupportive, and has been ignoring my texts and sleeping in the other room for the last two days.”

She’s left wondering if she’s not being considerate here.

Ok, so first of all, you should never, ever open a joint bank account with someone you’re not married to in order to avoid something like this happening, so let that be a lesson for her for the future.

She should take all of her money (including what her boyfriend stole from her to give to his sister) out of that joint bank account before dumping her boyfriend.

This is theft; there is no way around it, and I can’t believe that her boyfriend had the audacity to yell at her and try to make her out to be the bad guy after getting caught.
