If your partner secretly bought a fixer-upper in an area that you hate, while thinking you should do all of the desperately needed repairs for free, would you walk away from the relationship?
This 35-year-old man has spent the last four years with his 32-year-old girlfriend, and they moved in with one another three years ago.
Now, he’s always been vehemently opposed to living in a specific neighborhood that his girlfriend loves, and that has been a major point of contention in their relationship for some time.
“The real estate costs, taxes, and flood risks are entirely too high, plus the residents are pretentious, uptight [jerks]. I want to live somewhere more rural where we could get more for a lot less and not deal with so many people,” he explained.
“She wanted to be five minutes from her parents and siblings. We fought about it for about a year at one point before resigning our rental lease instead. We agreed we needed to find a compromise that would work for both of us.”
“Recently we’ve been having issues with the rental property that required several contractors to come and repair HVAC issues. I think this reignited her desire to purchase a home. Two weeks ago she disappeared from work and hid her location for 2 hours.”
He confronted his girlfriend, who then confessed that she had gone to an open house in the exact place he said he would never, ever reside in.
His girlfriend apologized and promised not to do something like that ever again. She did say she knew he would be mad, so she didn’t tell him to save herself a fight.
Yesterday, his girlfriend mentioned that she had to leave work early, as she apparently made an offer on that house she went to go see, which was accepted, so she had to give them money.

“She never told me she was even entertaining purchasing that house. It needs a lot of work on top of its terrible flood rating, and she expects me to do that work and invest my time and money into it,” he said.
“I told her under no circumstances was I having anything to do with it and would be looking for a new place to stay. She says if I do that, then she sees no reason to continue our relationship.”
“So I either keep the relationship and swallow her going behind my back to purchase a house in a place I refuse to live, or move myself and end up losing the relationship. My trust is completely destroyed right now.”
He’s more inclined to break up with his girlfriend because he is so offended by what she did, and she proved to him she doesn’t care about what he wants.
He’s left wondering if there’s something he’s missing here, or if there is any way to compromise with his girlfriend.
Yeah, this relationship has run its course. He can’t stay with her because she did make it clear his feelings don’t matter to her at all, and she will do what she wants anyway.
Buying a house is a major decision, and she should have included him.
