On March 9, 1977, Ellen Patricia Bresch went missing in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, after withdrawing about $20,000 from her bank account.
No one knows what went down after she left the bank. Her two adult children reported her missing when they didn’t hear from her.
Ellen was 49 years old, recently widowed, and lived alone in an apartment. Her husband had died two years prior to her disappearance. The money she withdrew came from the sale of her former home.
At the time of her disappearance, Ellen was carrying cash on her. She left behind her clothes, personal belongings, and everyday items in her apartment. Nothing suggested that she had planned to leave town.
Two days later, on March 11, her 1972 Oldsmobile was found in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn in Fort Mitchell. At first glance, the vehicle appeared untouched. The exterior showed no signs of struggle or visible damage. None of the windows was cracked or broken.
But on the inside of the car, there were bloodstains, and they matched Ellen’s blood type, which is Type A. Something had happened to her, but it was unclear what. The hotel employees did not recall seeing her, and no one checked in under her name.
After her disappearance, investigators uncovered another unusual detail. They found jewelry and watches in Ellen’s safe deposit box. They believed that the items had been stolen.
Among the items were a diamond-studded Gruen wristwatch, a Bulova watch, a necklace with a pendant, diamond earrings, and a diamond ring with a setting of two large diamonds and other smaller ones.
Ellen was described as a timid and fearful person who was “frightened by everyone,” which makes her disappearance even more concerning.

The investigation turned toward a man in Covington, Kentucky. He was a male acquaintance whom Ellen had been visiting about once a week for five years before she went missing.
Apparently, the man had sold her jewelry, including some of the pieces found in her possession. He was questioned extensively about her disappearance and even had to testify in front of a grand jury, but was never charged.
Ellen’s case remains unsolved. Foul play is suspected in her case, as it was unlike her to leave without warning.
At the time of her disappearance, Ellen stood approximately five feet and five inches tall and weighed around 115 pounds. She had brown hair and green eyes. She was wearing pants and a pink, white, and blue striped tank top.
