There are certainly topics that I fiercely believe should not be joked about, because it's simply not funny. Like miscarriages. When it comes to losing a baby, nothing about that is giggle-worthy.

This 30-year-old woman has spent the last three years married to her 32-year-old husband, Tom. Last year, they experienced a miscarriage, which was one of the worst moments of their lives.

To this day, she thinks about the miscarriage constantly, and Tom is aware of how deeply and negatively she is still impacted by it.

Over the weekend, Tom's parents hosted a family dinner at their house. His 35-year-old brother, Dan, known for being a jokester, was in attendance.

The problem with Dan is that he takes things too far and has no social etiquette. He thrives on making tasteless, off-color jokes, and everyone enables him by laughing along.

"We were all sitting at the table when Dan looked at me and said, 'So, when are you guys going to try again? You're not getting any younger.' I just kind of froze," she explained.

"Then he said, 'I mean, what's the worst that could happen? Another miscarriage?' And then he laughed. I felt like I couldn't breathe. I pushed my chair back, grabbed my purse, and walked out."

"I heard Tom call my name behind me, but I didn't stop. I got in my car and drove home. I was crying so hard I had to pull over. Tom came home an hour later and asked me why I left."

Tom stuck up for Dan and claimed he did not intend to offend her. He added that she humiliated him in front of his entire family by leaving the dinner early.

Tom stated she should have just told Dan to cut it out. She responded that she literally could not manage to get words out, let alone remember to breathe, after what Dan said.

She made it clear to Tom that she had never felt so embarrassed in her whole life and questioned him about why he didn't put Dan in his place.

"He said it all happened so fast and he didn't want to make a scene. I told him I'm not going to any family dinners for a while. I said I'm done pretending that Dan's comments are funny just to keep the peace," she continued.

"I said I need some distance from his family. Tom says I'm overreacting and punishing his whole family for one person's comment. He says Dan is 'just an idiot' and I should move past it. I feel like Dan crossed a huge line, and Tom didn't have my back at all."

She's left wondering if she was wrong to leave the family dinner following Dan's joke.

While I have definitely seen instances of people processing trauma or grief in strange ways, that's not what happened here. Dan has a long-standing history of being rude, and I can't believe her in-laws have allowed this to go unchecked.

Shame on Dan, and shame on her husband, for acting as if she embarrassed him rather than being upset by his own brother's comments.

Her husband is just as much of a problem as Dan. He should have been jumping to defend her.
