Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations so upsetting that our brains can’t help us act. We sit there in silence, or glued to our seats, unable to make a move or utter a word.
She was hanging out with her sister when her boyfriend uttered something so mean that she was rendered helpless. But do you think it’s fair to hold a grudge against a loved one for not standing up for you due to being overwhelmed by unfolding events?
This 22-year-old has spent the last three years dating her boyfriend, and if you had asked her last week, she would have told you this man was the one for her.
But he did something yesterday to her 16-year-old half-sister that made her change the high opinion of him that she used to have. Now, she and her half-sister have different moms and the same dad, but they don’t look like they’re related.
“Two years ago, my dad developed a severe form of leukemia, and he passed away within a couple of months. Needless to say, it was the hardest thing my sister and I had to face in life,” she explained.
“My sister took it particularly hard; she used to love going to the gym and working out, and she stopped doing so. She also started eating much more junk food, and ended up gaining a lot of weight.”
Yesterday, she and her boyfriend went to her sister’s house after her sister’s mom invited them to come over and have lunch with them.
They were all enjoying homemade pizza when her sister turned to her mom and asked if she could have another slice of pizza. Her boyfriend instantly jumped in to shame her sister in front of everyone, which left her horrified.
But in the heat of the moment, she failed to act or stand up for her sister, because she was so taken aback by the words that left his mouth.

“That’s when my boyfriend said, ‘Are you sure you want another one looking like that?’ My sister got up from the table and ran to her room,” she added.
“I was in shock, and I wasn’t able to tell him anything, nor follow my sister to her room, which I deeply regret. Thankfully, my boyfriend and I don’t live together, so before he dropped me off at home, I told him it was over because he can’t disrespect my sister like that, especially because he had been there when my dad died and knew how it made both of us feel.”
“I tried to call my sister, and she won’t answer. I texted her mom to ask her if she’s ok, and she said she’s ok, and she’s not mad at me, but she doesn’t want to talk to anybody right now.”
Today, when her sister is finished with school, her plan is to drop by her mom’s house with a bouquet of flowers to try to cheer her up.
While she is aware she wasn’t the one who said something cruel to her sister, she is hoping her sister will manage to forgive her for not sticking up for her in the moment. As she said, she was so blindsided that she was unable to say or do anything at the time.
Although she doesn’t think she stuck up for her sister, she did by dumping her boyfriend and making it clear that his behavior wouldn’t fly.
He’s a horrible person for bodyshaming her teen sister, knowing that her weight gain is due to her grief. But good riddance!
What advice do you have for her?
