If you found out that your child had an affair with their sibling’s spouse, would you ever be able to forgive them, or would you cut them out of your life?
This 59-year-old woman has two daughters, 33-year-old Chloe and 35-year-old Emma. Emma got married to her 36-year-old husband 11 years ago, and they have two kids.
Chloe married her 34-year-old husband 8 years ago, and they have a 5-year-old son. Six weeks ago, Emma called her up hysterical just after the clock struck midnight.
Emma revealed that she had spent months worried that her husband was hiding a secret from her, because he was defensive about his phone, growing apart from her, and coming up with reasons to stay late at the office.
On the evening that Emma called her, she said she went through her husband’s phone after he fell asleep and found years’ worth of inappropriate messages between him and Chloe.
Emma’s husband and Chloe had an affair that spanned nearly four years, which crushed Emma. Emma asked over and over again how Chloe could do such a thing to her.
Several days after the phone call, they all attended a birthday party for her brother when Emma went outside to confront Chloe, who spent a bit of time denying the affair while claiming it was a misunderstanding.
“When Emma said she’d read the messages herself, Chloe completely fell apart. She started crying, admitted the affair, and kept repeating, ‘I don’t know why I did it. I’m so sorry. It was the biggest mistake of my life,'” she said.
“Emma asked how four years could possibly be ‘a mistake.’ Chloe had no answer. The argument escalated into a screaming match. Chloe tried to slap Emma, but several relatives stepped in before she could.”

“Chloe’s husband quietly took their son home after realizing what had happened. Within days, he told Chloe he wanted a divorce. Emma also filed for divorce after her husband admitted everything. After it all came out, Chloe called me 82 times in one day.”
“I answered once because I hoped she was calling to explain herself. Instead, she cried the entire time, begging me not to abandon her. She said she’d already lost her husband, was probably going to lose shared custody of her son, and couldn’t bear losing her mother too. She said she knew she didn’t deserve forgiveness but begged me not to hate her forever.”
She didn’t lie to Chloe and pointed out that she could never view her in the same light again. She went on to tell Chloe she didn’t just make a single poor choice; she lied to her sister, her family, and her own husband for years on end.
She reminded Chloe that while she loves her since she’s her child, she doesn’t want to speak to her anymore. Chloe has not respected that and has kept trying to contact her, and she just ignores Chloe.
Her family thinks this is really mean, and her sister said that Chloe has lost everything in her life. Chloe has lost her bond with Emma, her marriage, and a ton of her friends following the affair coming out.
Her sister added that Chloe has also lost the family she desperately wanted to give to her son, and if she won’t stand by Chloe, her own kid, while she’s hitting the lowest moment in her life, who will dare to do that?
Her family has mentioned that snipping Chloe out of her life will force her grandson to grow up without getting to know her, and he’s innocent.
She gets where her loved ones are coming from, but whenever she pictures allowing Chloe to re-enter her life, she thinks of Emma and how she had to read all of the messages between Chloe and her husband in the middle of the night, all by herself.
Emma trusted her husband and Chloe, yet they betrayed her in the most horrible way.
“I don’t know if I can move past that. My family says I’m punishing Chloe forever for something she already deeply regrets. I feel like I’m simply refusing to pretend it never happened,” she continued.
She’s left wondering if she’s wrong to treat Chloe like this.
Chloe is an adult. Chloe absolutely knew what she was doing and that she was putting everything at risk to have her little affair. Chloe can face the consequences.
I have no sympathy for Chloe and am disappointed in her family for coming to her defense. They can feel free to be there for Chloe now that she’s hit rock bottom if they’re so upset about Chloe having nobody to turn to.
Chloe is only sorry she got caught, and she obviously didn’t care about her behavior, while Emma was still clueless about it.
