Her 16-Year-Old Daughter Wants To Get Dressed Up And Go Trick-Or-Treating But This Mom Is Telling The Internet Nobody That Age Should Unless That Have A “Mental Disability”
A mom in Georgia has a 16-year-old daughter who just celebrated her birthday in August.
Days ago while they were on their way home in the car after grocery shopping, her daughter pointed out a costume shop as they drove by.
Her daughter said that she would really like to go to the costume shop to get a costume for Halloween.
This mom asked her daughter why she needed one, to which her daughter responded that she wanted to go trick-or-treating.
Last year, her daughter did not get to go trick-or-treating at all due to the pandemic, and two years ago she spoke to her daughter about how she was getting too old to do it.
That year, her daughter did go trick-or-treating and this mom thought it would be the end of it.
“It honestly shocked me that she was 16y/o (and pretty mature for her age at that, a gifted student, etc.) and still immature enough to think she was going to walk around in a costume with a bunch of small children,” she explained.
She said to her daughter that she could not go trick-or-treating, and figured her daughter would drop it.
Well, her daughter didn’t, and her daughter is upset with her.

“She says lots of people her age still go, that she was even invited to go with a group of same-age friends, but I showed her the statistic that most people think that you shouldn’t trick or treat past 12 or so unless you have a mental disability,” this mom continued.
This mom tried to get her daughter to stay home and watch movies with her friends instead, but her daughter insisted Halloween is her favorite of all the holidays and that it will only be special for her if she can get dressed up to trick-or-treat with her friends.
Here’s what the internet had to say.
“You really think a mental disability is the only reason someone her age should trick or treat? Please say that to the parent of someone with a child who has a COGNITIVE disability and see what they say.”
“I am over the moon that your daughter wants to dress up and go out to get candy. I love when teenagers come to my house trick-or-treating.”
“My favorite kids are the ones that I can tell just went to their closet and threw a bunch of weird clothes on and went trick-or-treating.”
“Kids should be doing kids stuff. They grow up too fast.”
“Your minor daughter (cause yup..she’s still one of those) pretty much lost a year of her social and emotional growth. She’s going with a group of friends.”
“Let your daughter be a kid for a little while longer and remove the broomstick you’ve got lodged in ya.”
“My older kids still went up to 18… and only stopped then because, well, college parties > trick or treating. Let her go and be glad she isn’t keg standing at some guy named Chad’s apartment.”
“Adulting sucks, and after the last year and a half if a 45-year-old shows up on my doorstep and says “trick or treat” they’re getting a goddamned candy. It’s been a sh*tty time for everyone, and we need some of that nostalgic, feel-good happiness that trick or treating provides.”
“No one should be checking ID on Halloween. If the person is respectful, toss them a mini Mars bar and chill out about putting an age limit on one of the most fun holidays out there.”
“As my dad always says “you’re never too old to dress up for Halloween, but once you no longer dress up you’re too old.” Let kids be kids”.
“Let people find the small bits of joy they can in this terrible world. IMO as long as people dress up for Halloween they should be able to trick or treat.”
“If she were just wearing what she normally wears to go get free candy then that would be one thing. But she wants to have fun and be a kid and enjoy this holiday. LET HER!”
“I mean, I went trick or treating as a senior in college. A few of the international students (Japanese) had never been, so we made up some costumes and went to a handful of houses so they could have the experience.”
“Homeowners were a bit confused at first but loved it when we explained.”
“And we all got candy, even though the other American and I weren’t going to take any. Let her have her fun.”
This mom then shared in an update that she decided to let her daughter go after all. “She explained that she already knew she was pretty old to go trick or treating, and already had it in her head that it would be her last time going (she even said she wants to go as something with a mask, a plague doctor specifically, so people can’t recognize how old she is.) and that’s why she was extra hurt when I said no, because she knew it was her last shot,” she said in her update.
“I don’t want to make her grow up too fast just to save her from a few neighbors denying her candy. Thank you. Have a Happy Halloween no matter your age.”
