This TikToker Spurred Controversy After Allegedly Posting A Generous Gratuity For “Clout”

This past Valentine’s Day, TikTok user @Realkingkhang– a supposed “multi-millionaire”– spurred controversy on the platform.
After leaving a very generous tip for his waiter and uploading a video of the interaction, many users from the TikTok community alleged that he only posted the good deed for “clout.”
While out to dinner at the Olive Garden, the TikToker began recording his conversation with a waiter. All card payments are taken via electronic tablets located on each dining table at the restaurant.
Once the waiter approached and explained the payment process, the TikToker encouraged his waiter to slide the tip scale themselves.
“Swipe– one swipe– as far as it goes,” the man instructed.
The waiter could not see the sliding scale himself but ended up swiping a one hundred dollar tip. The TikToker also captioned the video, “He got a two hundred percent tip. The bill was only forty-six dollars.”
While the gesture of generously tipping restaurant staff is always appreciated, the TikTok community was unsure of the man’s intentions in publicizing his act of kindness.
The video gained over one hundred and seventy-five thousand views but only fourteen thousand likes. The comment section also erupted in displeasure and accusations.

“I’ve tipped one hundred dollars before, and I’m not a millionaire. I also did not film it for clout,” one user commented.
“Why do we make games out of tipping people and film it? Just give the money and leave it at that,” said another user.
“Speak a little louder. I don’t think anyone turned their heads like you wanted them to,” chimed in a third.
Still, some users disagreed with the accusations that the TikToker had vain intentions.
“Don’t tip, and you get shamed. Tip well, and you get shamed. This generation is the dumbest of all. So what if he films it? Everything is filmed now,” wrote one user.
“Screw the haters! I think this post could influence others to do acts of kindness like this. For all anyone knows, this waiter may have needed it,” commented another.
This controversy also caused the TikToker’s video to be picked up by the news. The man ended up posting a follow-up video to address the accusations against him.
“So I made it on the news! I guess someone was really upset with how I recorded myself tipping this waiter. He was excellent and two hundred percent tipped,” he began.
“They say I was bragging, that I was flexing, and that I should not even record it when I do things like this,” the man said, “It does not matter how you live your life– what you do or what you say– you will always be judged by somebody else.”
“I have people who say I am greedy and do not donate or give back to my community. But when I make a video, people say I am bragging and that it’s not sincere because I try to get views,” the man continued, “No matter what you do, you will never please anyone. So just do you.”
This TikToker is not the first to graciously tip a waiter and publicize it on social media. Do you believe that a good deed automatically becomes ingenuine by filming the interaction? Or, is there a fine line between appropriate versus boastful filming?
