People Who Work With Dead Bodies Reveal The Surprising Things About What Truly Happens After We Die
Let’s face it: death is terrifying. And even though we all know death is a part of life, most of us still push this inevitable reality to the back of our minds and try to think about it as little as possible.
But, there are still a ton of people that work with dead bodies on a daily basis. Think of morticians, embalmers, forensic pathologists, and funeral directors.
These professionals have to deal with death every day and, in turn, know a lot more about what truly happens at “the end” than most want to.
Still, for one Reddit user, their curiosity was overwhelming.
“People who work with dead bodies– what is something we really don’t want to know about what you do?” they asked.
And the thread received two thousand pretty unsettling responses.
Eyes And Mouths Don’t Always Stay Closed
“We may have our eyes closed when we die, but they don’t stay that way. The first time I realized this was around 3:00 a.m. when I had to check something in the morgue. I looked, and this dead dude’s eyes were looking in my direction. Scared everything out of me.”

“To prep for an open casket funeral, the mortician will sew the eyes and mouth shut to prevent them from opening on their own.”
We Exhale Again After Death
“My uncle told me this story of a friend who worked in a morgue. He used to dress the bodies before viewings, and there was this one time when he was trying to put a coat on this man.”
“So, he sat the man up and leaned him over his shoulder while wrapping the coat around him (essentially in a hugging position. And I guess the way the body was leaning let out an air pocket he still had in his lungs.”
“In turn, the body let out a slight exhale sounding like he was breathing in his ear. Apparently, he quit his job shortly after.”
“We had to move my mom’s body after she died, and the pressure made her sigh a little bit. It sounded exactly like her voice even though she was dead– same vocal cords, you know?
“I really wish I could un-hear it.”
The Truth Behind Donating Your Body To Science
“I am a mortuary grad. If you donate your body to a medical school, they don’t have to accept your ‘gift,’ as they call it. And if they do, we morts will prep your body in a very specific way according to their guidelines.”
“Most require cadavers to have full removal of hair (head, facial, including eyebrows) to ‘take away the personality.'”
“And no matter what school you go to, you will probably sit in a freezer for about a year or two. Sometimes, you also won’t be a full cadaver. Your feet could go to one class and your torso to another.”
“You will be there, usually, for the duration of the student’s stay. So, your body could very well be used for three-plus years.”
“And you will have a funeral paid for by the school. You will be cremated with the rest of the cadavers and honored at a big celebration. Funeral directors and the faculty of the school will speak, and your family will be in attendance.”
