She Unexpectedly Went Blind During Her Freshman Year Of College, Met Her Now-Husband, And He Raised $20,000 To Restore Her Vision
When this TikToker named Sophie Rodrigues was a freshman in college, she went from having 20/20 vision to tragically losing her eyesight out of nowhere. But, she eventually gained a soulmate– who even helped Sophie get her vision back.
And it all began when Sophie was driving to campus one morning.
“Everything started as a normal day. I was headed to school, and it was my last day of my freshman year of college,” she recalled in a TikTok video about the day she went blind.
But, during her drive, Sophie began to feel a bit “off.” And then, her vision started to blur.
“I realized that I was not seeing very well and figured I was having some sort of an allergic reaction because my allergies were really bad,” Sophie explained.
Nonetheless, her vision loss only progressed throughout the drive. Then, once she finally reached her classroom, Sophie had a startling realization– she could not see the board or even read a piece of paper in front of her.
And at that moment, she began to panic.
“For a split second, my eyesight was completely shutting down. I started panicking, and I was like, ‘Am I dying? Or are my ears going to go next?'” Sophie said.

So, she ran out of the classroom, called her parents, and got picked up from campus. Then, over the next eight months, Sophie’s vision slowly degenerated until she was officially considered legally blind.
She has since been diagnosed with keratoconus, a condition in which the eye’s cornea thins and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape, according to the Mayo Clinic.
The exact cause of keratoconus remains unknown; however, genetic predisposition and environmental factors are thought to be proponents.
Moreover, how Sophie met the love of her life and fought back against keratoconus is an entirely different story.
She recently posted a now-viral TikTok describing how she met her husband, Christian, when she was still blind.
“NOW I CAN SEE JUST HOW HANDSOME HE IS,” Sophie wrote on the video.
It garnered over 3.1 million views and gained five hundred and ten thousand likes. Tons of commenters also begged to hear the entire story behind Sophie’s marriage– so she decided to share it online.
“When Christian and I met, I was still legally blind,” Sophie began.
In fact, she had just gone legally blind only a few months earlier. So, it was extremely difficult for Sophie to complete day-to-day tasks. But Sophie soon met Christian, and he came to the rescue.
“I feel like he made it his personal responsibility to make sure that I was okay. And we were just friends; we had just met! But I had never felt just such tender and selfless and wholesome care from someone,” she explained.
Christian would help Sophie with her schoolwork, take her to the cafeteria to ensure she always got food, and was even the reason Sophie was able to regain her vision.
“Oh, and he found the doctor that cured my eyesight and raised twenty thousand dollars to get me the surgery. All while being a seriously fun and positive light in my life,” Sophie said.
“And even though we did not start dating until four years after we first met, I always knew it was him.”
Talk about an incredible Disney-like love story.
