She Told Her Her Fiancé’s Family At Dinner Last Night That She Makes $300,000, And It Made Her Sister-In-Law Start Crying
Last night, a 26-year-old woman had dinner with her 26-year-old fiancé and his side of the family. Her fiancé has 2 siblings; an 18-year-old brother and a 29-year-old sister.
Now, she currently is employed by a big tech company, and she works as a product manager. She’s been working here since she graduated from college 5 years back.
“My salary has steadily climbed in the last couple of years, so now I’m making a very large amount,” she explained.
“However, I am a big proponent of salary transparency, especially as a woman in a male-dominated field. I’ve helped multiple people who were being underpaid negotiate higher salaries after sharing my salary history.”
“I’ve also helped many younger college students who are looking to go into the industry by sharing my salary.”
Back to dinner last night: the topic of the tech industry and its popularity among job seekers came up.
Not only does she work in this industry, but her fiancé also does as well, so they both had a lot to talk about.
Her fiancé’s brother is interested in going to college for computer science, and at one point, he asked her how much she really makes in her job.
As she does believe in being transparent about her salary, she had no problem informing him that she currently makes $300,000 and has as of a few months ago when she got promoted to senior product manager.
Her fiancé’s little brother couldn’t believe how much she makes, and he loudly exclaimed about it before congratulating her and mentioning that she really is “impressive.”
She said thank you to her fiancé’s little brother before saying that she was willing to help him get an internship or a job in college.
As she was saying all of this, her sister-in-law began crying.
Her mother-in-law rushed to comfort her sister-in-law, and then all of a sudden, everyone at the table stopped talking.
“I immediately apologize and asked what was wrong, and she just said, “it’s just…hard seeing people make that much when I’m making $15/hour working my a** off 50 hours a week,” she said.
“She also said after that, “some people really do get everything, huh?” and then glared at me and kept crying. Then she excused herself to the bathroom, and my MIL followed.”
“Here’s my SIL’s situation: she’s currently a single mom and is pregnant with her second. She’s working a minimum-wage job to support her kid. I’m very empathetic to her situation, and my fiancé and I have extended a helping hand multiple times (e.g., babysitting, buying her child toys/other gifts/necessities, sending money and supplies, etc.).”
Her sister-in-law and mother-in-law ended up getting up from the table and walking right out of the restaurant. They didn’t come back.
Her mother-in-law later texted her to say that she was not being sensitive and owes her sister-in-law an apology.
Her sister-in-law has not said a word to her since dinner last night. Her fiancé thinks his sister was rude to get up and leave in the middle of dinner.
“See, I would apologize, but I think she owes me an apology, too,” she concluded.
She’s left wondering if it was not polite for her to share her salary at dinner, resulting in making her sister-in-law cry.
