This 24-year-old woman recently got engaged. So, this past weekend, she and her fiancé held an engagement party.

They invited both of their immediate family members, as well as some close friends– totaling about 30 guests. And the party was hosted at a nice Italian restaurant in their city.

Anyway, at the event, she and her fiancé provided guests with two options for their main course– either fish or meat.

“It is also important to note that the only people in both mine and my fiancé’s family who have food restrictions are my dad and stepmom– as they are pescetarians,” she added.

So, the fish option obviously accommodated that restriction. Plus, most of the people in their families actually love seafood– meaning that the fish option wound up being more popular than the meat option.

About one week before the engagement dinner, though, her 20-year-old younger brother contacted her to RSVP for the event. During that conversation, he also asked if he would be allowed to bring his new girlfriend as a plus one.

Now, she claims that her brother often dates around and always brings different girls around their family. So, she honestly had no idea that he was even in a relationship.

Regardless, she wound up telling her brother that he could bring his girlfriend and said she would get an extra seat.

Then, the night of the engagement dinner arrived, and it started out great. All of her guests were having a great time, and her brother’s new girlfriend reportedly seemed really sweet.

Once it came time to place dinner orders, though, everything went sideways. According to her, her brother’s girlfriend pulled a waiter aside and very loudly asked, “Are there any vegan options?”

At that point, the waiter appeared confused and told her brother’s girlfriend that they were offering a fish or a meat option.

But the waiter said they could offer a salad with some roasted potatoes and other vegetables as a vegan substitute.

Rather than accepting that, though, she claimed that her brother’s girlfriend started getting “mouthy” with the waiter.

“Well, what if I don’t want a salad, huh? You just assume because I’m vegan, I only eat salads? What if I want some pasta? What kind of restaurant is this? This is discrimination,” her brother’s girlfriend told the waiter.

Now, at that point, she thought it was time to get involved. She tried to explain to the girlfriend how the only guests who had food restrictions were pescatarians.

So, those were the only restrictions she considered when selecting the restaurant for her engagement dinner.

After all, she did not even know that her boyfriend’s girlfriend would be attending until one week prior; meanwhile, she had made the reservation a month in advance.

Still, her brother’s girlfriend was not understanding and actually told her it was embarrassing that she could not accommodate all of her guests. Then, her brother’s girlfriend even called her small-minded!

“So, I told her, ‘Sorry, I didn’t think to accommodate you. I’ll consider that in the future; hopefully, you’ll be around long enough for me to be able to do so,'” she said. Yikes!

Once she said that her brother’s girlfriend ended up leaving, and her brother ultimately followed.

Plus, ever since the dinner, her brother has not stopped messaging her and telling her that she needed to apologize since she embarrassed his girlfriend in front of everybody.

Her mom even took her brother’s side, too, and claimed that she needed to be the bigger person and apologize in order to “keep the peace.”

So now, she has been left wondering whether making her brother’s vegan girlfriend feel “alienated” at her engagement dinner really makes her a real jerk or not.

Was it her responsibility to magically know her brother’s girlfriend was vegan or was it her brother’s responsibility to inform her beforehand? Why do you think the girlfriend was so rude to both her and the waiter? Did she have a right to stand her ground at her own engagement dinner? If you had been in her shoes, how would you have handled this situation?
