Breez’s son appears to enjoy it when the guinea pigs begin chewing on his hair and even purposefully leans his head against the cage for them.
“Get your head away from there,” her boyfriend tells her son in the video. “You’re gonna be bald!”
As strange as it sounds, seeing guinea pigs eat hair is totally normal and a common behavior amongst the furry pets.
Guinea pigs often exhibit a social behavior called ‘barbering,’ where they chew or eat chunks of hair off another guinea pig, themself, or their owner.
According to Squeaks Scales & Tails, a guinea pig typically eats their owner’s hair for several reasons, the main three being if there’s a lack of fiber in their diet, as a way to socialize with their owner, or simply out of boredom.
Because guinea pigs can’t form hairballs in their stomachs, there isn’t really any threat to them chewing hair.
So although what Breez’s guinea pigs do to her son is normal, they may want to encourage him to keep his head away from the cage for appearance’s sake!
