Having a pool in your backyard can be a privilege and is a ton of fun, but it’s also very costly to maintain each year.

One woman started covering up her pool every time her cousin brought her daughter over to visit because she had an accident in it. Now, her cousin is mad at her for singling out her daughter.

She’s 26-years-old and lives with her 32-year-old husband. They bought their house four years ago, and it has a nice pool in the backyard.

She comes from a big family, and many of them live nearby, so she and her husband love to host family gatherings and let everyone swim in their pool.

One of her cousins is 38-years-old and lives out of state, so she’s only been able to visit a handful of times.

Her cousin has a 12-year-old daughter with special needs. She has Fragile X Syndrome and has the mental capacity of a four-year-old.

Her cousin’s daughter needs to be watched because she also has issues controlling her bladder and lives with severe incontinence.

“She also needs constant supervision because she has a habit of screaming and biting herself if she gets stressed out,” she said.

“I love both of them to pieces and love when they do visit, but when they do, I cover the pool and keep it off limits.”

She had to start covering her pool whenever her cousin brought her daughter over because when they first moved in, her daughter had an accident in the pool that ended up spreading into the water even though she was wearing a swim diaper.

They had to spend over $500 to get the pool professionally cleaned and didn’t want to make her cousin pay because she’s dealing with many financial hardships to take care of her daughter.

So, to avoid something like that happening again, when her cousin’s family is over, they cover the pool and say there are issues with the filter so that no one can swim.

Many of her other family members knew the truth about why she covered it and supported her decision.

Unfortunately, her cousin found out through her aunt the real reason why she would cover up the pool for their visits.

Her cousin called her and was furious.

“She accused me of never loving her daughter and [hating] it when they visit,” she recalled.

“I told her that that was completely untrue, but she wouldn’t listen.”

She apologized for making her cousin feel so upset and told her it was never her intention. She simply wanted to avoid more accidents in her pool.

Her cousin told her she was despicable for “not accepting” her daughter and said she would never visit her house again.

“My husband agrees with me,” she added. “The rest of the family is understanding but feels that I should be more understanding of her struggles. So now I’m wondering if I was wrong.”

Did she do anything wrong by covering up her pool?
