“Sometimes our expectations for the men we date are much higher than the expectations that we have for girlfriends. When your expectations have to be high all around,” Elle says.
She goes on to explain another scenario in which her system applies. If she invites a friend to her birthday party and they either can’t make it for a silly reason or say they will be there and don’t show up, then she will choose not to attend their birthday party either.
“People think that’s petty, but if you’re a high-value woman, you have choices. I have a lot of girlfriends, so if you’re not going to be a good girlfriend to me, I will not be a girlfriend to you, period,” she states.
Elle explains that if someone is not willing to follow her friendship rules, then they are better off as her acquaintance rather than a friend.
While some of her viewers agree with her take on holding people accountable in their friendships with you, other people believe the rules she has are too much to expect out of a friend 24/7.
“People go through different seasons and different things, and you can’t always expect this. Be friends for their personality and love them,” one commenter says.
“I see how this may work for some, but nah. If I have the idea to go somewhere, I’ll ask every time. It’s okay if you can’t go. I’m not keeping tabs,” another commenter shares.
What do you think about Elle’s advice? What is the key to managing your friendships?
