Have you ever stayed in a vacation home with friends or family and fought with someone over a room?

It happens all the time, as there’s always that one person who is very insistent on getting the best room in the house no matter what.

One woman recently got into some drama with her sister-in-law after she didn’t let her older niece take over the bedroom she had reserved for her younger niece on vacation.

She and her husband each have sisters with kids. Recently, her sister’s husband has been in the hospital, and her sister has been running around trying to take care of him and her 14-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter.

So, she and her husband figured she’d do her sister a favor and take her niece and nephew to the beach. They rented a beach house for two weeks.

The house has four rooms, so the layout was supposed to be that she and her husband would sleep in one bedroom, her niece and nephew could have their own, and then there’d be one bedroom to spare.

Before their trip, she and her husband got an unexpected request.

“My husband’s sister Mary is a single mom to his seventeen-year-old niece, Ava,” she explained.

“When she heard about the trip, she asked if she could tag along. We originally said no, but she kept pushing and pushing, and eventually, we said they could come for a few days, but they had to be okay with sharing a room and bed.”

When Mary and Ava arrived, Ava started throwing a fit over the size of the bed she and her mom had to share.

She admits the bed was a bit tight, as it was probably full-size. But instead of finding some kind of compromise, Mary immediately suggested and eventually started demanding that her other niece and nephew share a room while she and Ava get their own.

“I said no,” she recalled. “The specific goal of this vacation [was] for my niece and nephew, and they are priorities in this situation. I said Ava could sleep on the pull-out couch, which was also rejected.”

Almost everyone went to the beach the day after this initial argument except Ava and Mary, who stayed back at the house. While they were there, Ava spent the day in her younger niece’s room. She told Ava she shouldn’t be in there without permission from her other niece. When she found out Ava was in there against her younger niece’s wishes, she told her she wasn’t allowed in that bedroom.

“That led to another fight, and now Ava and Mary [are] stomping around and sulking,” she said,

“My husband and I both feel that this is totally fair. If the plan had originally been for Ava and Mary to come, then I’d get that, generally, the older kid gets priority. But in this case, as I said, this trip is specifically designed for my niece and nephew to have the best time possible.”

Should she feel bad for kicking Ava out of her other niece’s room, or were Ava and Mary being obnoxious?
