She’s Not Allowing Alcohol At Her Wedding, And Her Aunt Started Posting Rants On Social Media About How She Wants To Skip Out Because It’s A Dry Wedding

People tend to have very strong feelings about these two things at weddings – alcohol and children.

One bride-to-be is quite insistent on having an alcohol-free wedding and is now getting a lot of flak from her family members for her decision.

She’s 25-years-old and getting married in May of next year. Currently, she’s in the middle of planning her reception and has the venue booked. She and her fiancée have been discussing what kind of food and drinks they want served.

The other day, her mom and one of her aunts were in town for a visit and started helping her make some plans.

“The topic of drinking came up, and my aunt asked what kind of cocktails we’d be serving,” she recalled.

“I told her we wouldn’t be serving alcohol at the wedding. She was shocked and asked what everyone was going to drink. I told her there would be water, sweet tea, lemonade, fruit punch, and soda available.”

Her aunt started getting upset and listed off reasons why her drink choices were a bad idea. For instance, her aunt told her there shouldn’t be any sweet tea, lemonade, or fruit punch because the sugar content is high, and their family has a history of diabetes.

When she reminded her aunt that there would be sugar-free drink options like water and unsweetened iced tea, her aunt asked why alcohol wouldn’t be an option at her wedding.

“I told her I simply didn’t want to serve any at my wedding,” she explained.

“My fiancée and I would be financially responsible for the purchase, and we would feel responsible for their actions. She asked if she and the other drinkers of the family could bring their own beer and said it really wouldn’t be a party without one. I said no, again, because it’s my wedding and fiancée, and I would feel responsible for drunk guests.”

Her aunt began giving her a lot of grief and made a subtle dig at her wedding plan entirely, saying that it’s already a shame she won’t be getting married in a church, so she should at least have a good reception. Then, she told her aunt that if she couldn’t go one night without drinking, she was the one with the problem.

Her mom chimed in at that point, telling her to apologize to her aunt, but she refused to. Instead, she asked them both to leave her house. The next day, her aunt publicly posted rants on Facebook about her dry wedding and said she didn’t want to go anymore.

Now, she’s been getting bombarded with messages from people in her life who all seem to have an input on what she should do.

She feels her and her fiancée’s decision to have a dry wedding isn’t that big of a deal, and she’s going to be extra diligent about letting her guests know what to expect beforehand. Additionally, she wants some of the children in her family to be there for her reception, and she doesn’t want to risk putting them in a room with a bunch of rowdy, intoxicated adults.

“I’m also not anti-alcohol or something,” she added.

“I like drinking, there are just too many concerning factors and liabilities with allowing it at my wedding, including the incredibly expensive cost of providing the alcohol.”

Is she doing anything wrong by having a dry wedding, or was her aunt being cruel?
