During The Nineteenth Century, Medical Students Robbed Graves During A Cadaver Shortage

In 1887, Dr. William T. Cathell Jr., from the Baltimore Medical School, was arrested for stealing the body of a young black woman. The doctor, along with three medical students, had been drinking and brought the body back to the dissecting room.

There, they had some fun with the corpse, sticking a pipe into the dead woman’s mouth to make it appear that she was having a smoke. Cathell claimed that he had needed a cadaver for his anatomy class and was not prosecuted after his arrest.

Finally, in the year 1900, body snatching died down. The state anatomy board had been created several years prior to manage unclaimed corpses. Bodies were stored at Hopkins, and any good school had permission to use them.
