He Proposed To His Fiancée In Italy But Didn’t Mention Wanting A Prenup Until Last Week, So His Fiancée Went To Stay At Her Mom’s House, And He’s Now Refusing To Tie The Knot Without Having A Prenup In Place

Just a few months ago, this 29-year-old guy proposed to his fiancée, who is 27.
They took a trip to Italy together, and he decided to pop the big question over a romantic dinner. He knows it might have been cheesy, but his fiancée loved it and enthusiastically agreed to marry him.
So, ever since they’ve gotten home, she has been excitedly planning every last detail of their wedding.
“Sometimes to the extent of calling me at work to confirm colors or styles of certain decor pieces,” he explained.
“I work in tech, it’s a pretty well-known company, and my job pays decently. My fiancée works in retail. She obviously doesn’t make as much as me, but I don’t mind financially supporting her.”
For a bit more insight into their finances, he also owns the home they currently live in together and pays more than half of their bills. They also don’t plan to have kids in the future.
However, after he broached the topic of a prenup about a week ago, his fiancée was completely caught off guard.
It all began one evening when she had cooked him dinner. They’d both had a long day and sat down to eat together and relax.
Then, while they were eating, his fiancé brought up some legal details for their wedding. He listened and nodded along to what she was saying and occasionally interjected to provide his input or ask some questions.

And later, toward the end of their conversation, he made a comment about a prenuptial agreement.
I said something along the lines of, ‘I think we should file for a prenup at the same time we’re filing for our license,'” he recalled.
Well, at that moment, he detailed how his fiancée’s entire demeanor changed, and her facial expression looked like a mix of hurt and anger.
Afterward, she went on to claim that they didn’t need a prenup since it would be “pointless.” Apparently, his fiancée said they planned to stay together forever, so a prenup would not be necessary.
Still, he tried to explain how having a prenup would just make him feel more comfortable as a precaution. That didn’t go over well with his fiancée, though.
Instead, she just became even more upset and asked if he didn’t trust her.
“I explained that it had nothing to do with trust. It was simply about having it in the event something were to happen,” he detailed.
Regardless, his fiancée just continued accusing him of being unreasonable and not trusting her.
This caused him to get pretty worked up, too, and he wound up raising his voice– pointing out how he only wants a prenup for protection since he earns more than his fiancée.
That remark left his fiancée looking pretty shocked and speechless, but he still kept going.
“A prenup makes me feel more comfortable. If you don’t want to sign one, then fine, but I can’t get married without it,” he told her.
His fiancée did not answer that, though, and instead just stormed out of the house with her car keys in hand. He also heard her car start and tried to rush outside after her, but his fiancée had already left.
Since then, he has tried calling and texting his fiancée, but she has not gotten back to him. The only thing he’s received is a message from his fiancée’s mom, who claimed that his fiancée would be staying at her house until things calmed down.
“I do feel bad for what I said, and I do regret the way I acted. I want to stay with this amazing woman, and I definitely should have mentioned a prenup prior,” he vented.
“However, I don’t feel like my request was too much. I figured since we see eye-to-eye on pretty much everything, we’d see eye-to-eye on this as well. Obviously, that wasn’t the case.”
So now, with his fiancée so upset with him, he’s not sure if refusing to tie the knot without a prenup in place really does make him a jerk or not.
Can you understand why a prenup would make him feel more comfortable? Even so, do you think he should’ve brought this up before proposing to his fiancée? How do you suggest he handles this situation?
