If you’re throwing a wedding and want someone to be there who needs special accommodations, you need to make sure those accommodations are made.

One woman recently told her best friend she would not attend her wedding because she invited her disabled daughter but didn’t book a handicap-accessible venue.

She’s 32 and has a seven-year-old daughter named Lily, who has a condition that requires her to be in a wheelchair. Despite her limitations, Lily is a bright girl who doesn’t let her disability bring her down.

She has a best friend named Jane, who she’s been super close with since high school. Jane and Lily adore each other, and Jane has always supported their family.

However, a recent incident involving Jane’s upcoming wedding has her second-guessing just how supportive she is.

Jane announced she was getting married a few months ago and told her she and Lily were invited. Jane asked her to be her Maid of Honor, and she’s been looking forward to the big day. Jane booked an old historical venue, and she figured she would have figured out ways to make it accessible for Lily.

Unfortunately, when Jane shared her bridal party itinerary days before the wedding, she noticed there was no mention of accommodations for disabled guests at the venue.

“When I approached Jane about it, she said that while she understood my concern, the venue couldn’t make the necessary accommodations due to its historical status,” she recalled.

“She suggested I could leave Lily with a babysitter for the day. I was taken aback. I couldn’t fathom leaving Lily behind, especially since she was excited about the wedding.”

Even the thought of telling Lily she couldn’t attend Jane’s wedding broke her heart, and she was hurt that her friend didn’t take Lily’s disability into consideration before booking the venue and inviting her.

After giving it some thought, she decided to tell Jane she wouldn’t be in or attend her wedding either.

“Jane was upset, mentioning how she’d dreamed of having me by her side on her big day,” she said.

“She felt I was putting her in an unfair position so close to the wedding.”

Since their disagreement, she and Jane’s friends have been divided. Some of them think Jane was insensitive and that she has the right to be upset and not go to the wedding. Others believe she should respect Jane’s venue choice and be there for her friend on her big day.

“Now, with the wedding just a week away and our friendship strained, I’m second-guessing my decision,” she added.

Should she put her issues with Jane aside and attend her wedding or stay home in support of her daughter?
