There’s no denying that there are plenty of perks to being single. But sometimes, being single really sucks. Not only do you have to contend with the awful dating scene, but you also have to deal with all those unpleasant remarks and unsolicited advice from literally everyone you encounter.

People generally mean well, but they often miss the mark with painfully overused phrases. TikToker Lex (@alexaaaval) is sharing some of the things she hates being told as a single 28-year-old woman. Here are a few of the comments she hears on a regular basis.

“Good for you.”

In response to informing people that she is single, Lex often is told, “Good for you.” She explains that the phrase confuses her, especially because she usually hears it from married couples or people in relationships, and questions if it’s supposed to make her feel better about her romantic life.

“I think the undertone to this message is like ‘good for you’ for not settling maybe? Or just for not being with someone because you think you have to be. I don’t know,” she speculated.

“Live your life.”

Lex states that this phrase is pointless because she has already been living her life for the past twenty or so years; therefore, a change in her relationship status will not have an effect on that.

“That comment to me makes it sound like when you have a boyfriend or a significant other, you just stop living your life and focus on them when, in reality, it’s so important to maintain your individuality when you’re in a relationship,” said Lex.

It seems to imply a lot about that commenter’s own life. Do they feel like their significant other is holding them back? Do they secretly wish they were single again?
