Her Mom’s Going On A Crazy Fast And Wants Her To Buy Her Little Sister Groceries During The Process

I‘ve always felt bad for young people who had to fend for themselves as kids even though they still lived with their parents.
One woman is upset with her mom, who is expecting her to buy groceries for herself and her teenage sister because she’ll be going on an extreme fasting diet.
She’s 27-years-old and lives at home with her mom and 15-year-old sister. After her parents divorced, she decided to live with her mom to help take care of her sister, who is homeschooled, and her grandmother, who died of Alzheimer’s last year.
Her mom has a history of being extremely religious and often making rash decisions for religious reasons. Unfortunately, as a result of this extreme behavior, her sister has grown up extremely isolated and sheltered.
Recently, her mom told her and her sister that she would begin fasting for most of the day to “hear from God.”
“She’d only be eating breakfast and lunch [but] no dinner,” she explained.
“The meals she would eat would be mostly vegetables or something like that. She said that she was going to buy her own food and told me I’d have to figure out how to feed myself and my sister, [as] she would have no part in what we were eating.”
She was fine with the idea of buying her own food, as she’s already been getting her own groceries since living at home and already contributes to half the household bills. However, she finds it ridiculous that her mom would expect her to feed her little sister on her own.
“I just don’t think it’s right that she’s washing her hands clean of feeding her own kid,” she said.

“My sister is still underage, and she’s just dumped the pressure of making sure she gets to eat on me.”
“It came to a head when we went to the store yesterday [when] she refused to pay for anything other than the few groceries she’d bought for herself. I put everything back and walked out of the store. She called me irresponsible and selfish.”
She eventually returned to the store to get a few essentials, so her sister had something to eat. When she tried reasoning with her mom, her mom told her that if she loved her sister, she would make sure she had something to eat.
However, she feels that while she can ensure her sister has something to eat daily, her mom should still contribute to their grocery budget.
Is she asking too much of her mom, or is her mom asking too much of her?
