Here’s a fun little hair fact: If you didn’t already know, your hair is at its most vulnerable state when it’s wet.

When I first learned that fact, I became a bit ashamed of my hair-drying habits. For years, I would twist, pull, and wring my hair as I wrapped it up in towels and tried to get it dry as fast as possible. Little did I know I was manhandling my hair when it was at its most vulnerable.

Of course, not everyone has the option to air dry their hair after every wash. For people with especially thick or long hair, it can take a long time to dry.

Plus, sometimes there’s nothing worse than running late for work or an event and not having time to dry and style your hair.

However, it’s a good idea to take extra precautions when drying your hair so you don’t damage it while it’s wet. Here are some tips for drying your hair properly!

One of the safest ways to dry your hair with minimal damage is to air dry it. If you want to help your hair dry faster when air drying, you can use a wide-tooth comb to not only detangle your hair but also allow some air to flow through it.

Gently shaking through your hair with your fingers every few minutes is also a nice way to get some air flowing and allow certain sections of your hair to breathe.

While blow-dryers can be more risky in terms of damaging your hair because of the heat that comes from it, they’re an ideal drying technique if you’re styling your hair.

If you can, wait until your hair has partially dried before hitting it with the heat from your blow dryer. The more air-dried your hair is, the less heat and time you’ll have to use from your blow dryer. Plus, you’ll still be able to style your hair if it’s 60% dry.
